BSG 4.3 or 4.1 He That Believeth In Me

And so we returned to where we were to watch the writers start to try to write themselves out of their mess, and whoa there were a lot of strands to pick up, although the ep mainly focused on Kara, the four of the five - some of them, certainly, and Gaius. It started with a big space fight about which I was jaded (oh yeah, they’re in “mortal danger”,) where Sam’s participation played a key role and what with being married to Kara, he was probably the newly aware Cylon we saw the most of. As Kara literally beat him up, having cut him with her words, I again thought: not the character I care the most about. The one I care the most about of the four is the Chief, and we didn’t much get into his feelings about all this, or get to see him around Cally and his son, who is not fully human. Oh, is Sam/Tory a thing of the past now that Kara is around to take take take from him? Why bother going down that cul-de-sac at the end of season 3, then?

The red light recognition was new (right? And with that and Caprica being aware that she’s programmed not to think of the Five, at least the writers are aware that they’re going to have to explain all this) and led to a major retreat that puzzled most of the Galacticans.

My main thought about the space battle was ‘Was that ship that was destroyed called the Pegasus? Whuh?’

The big puzzler was Kara’s miraculous return from the dead, though. She didn’t get why everyone was so at her for being away for a few hours, although even after they explained that they though she was dead and it had been several months and the state of the ship was also mighty mysterious, she seemed to be impervious to how she was sounding. She’d passed out a bit, but she knew how to get to Earth via A Feeling. Everyone bar the viewers thought she might be a Cylon (she might be, but I am less sure of that than I was during and after the season 3 finale.) This was mainly to make Sam and the others feel bad, as Tigh imagined he’d been programmed a la Boomer and coped really well (not) with it.

Lee and Bill really, really wanted to believe Kara, but Adama felt the weight of his responsibility. Lee declared he was going to change course…by working for the Government, i.e. Roslin - which feels like a rehash of early season 1, but whatever. Also his argument about what if Zack were a Cylon and how that wouldn’t change their feelings for him seemed beside the point to me - the Adamas would have other problems as in how the Cylons had swopped out their biological kin then. I know it’s setting things up for the reveals about Tigh and Tyrol, possibly even Sam for Lee, as well as Lee arguing ‘We should trust Kara, no matter what, BECAUSE.’

Anyhow, Athena didn’t recognise the newly awoken Cylons (or even, seemingly, sense their presence.) But Caprica, who has this tenuous alliance with Laura, knew the five were near (if the fifth isn’t Kara, there aren’t that many characters left that it could be, and my very logical reasons for why it can’t be Helo or Gaius might be undermined by writerly swerves. But isn’t Caprica more interesting (certainly more sympathetic) than Gaius?

But guess who had a subplot? He was a bit petulant about finding out that the plan was for him to be stuck in a candlelight compartment on the Galactica with a bunch of acolytes, because no one else would have him (heh). Ah well, at least these acolytes were young and female, until they brought in the sick kid. I liked that he found some humanity and recognition of what he’d done, although it all became about testing Gaius’s faith. Better though was bringing back the father to attack him, except even if I’ve been deeply cynical about attempts on Baltar’s life for most of the series, here Gaius’s attacker was monologuing in a way that showed he wasn’t quite ready to kill Baltar. Some super smiting from Gaius’s acolyte (but as they’d tried to kill her, understandable if not something one could condone.) So, Gaius is now able to preach monotheism from Six’s mouth to these people.

Anyway, Kara ‘trust my feeling’ had the brilliant idea of threatening Roslin with a gun to stop it with the jumping already and turn back the other way for Earth. I know she was clearly hurting after every jump, but it seems like a daft plan if you’re trying to convince the President and the Admiral that you’re not a Cylon and they need to comply with your wishes. The first hybrid may be wrong and Kara’s Destiny may be to bring the remainder of the Colonies to Earth, but she’s being exasperating at this point.

I wasn't in the mood to watch more than the one epiosde.
