Three-Sentence Fics (February)
My contributions to the Three-Sentence Ficathon this month (I was several days, if not weeks, behind everyone else and I have yet to look at the second post).
For the prompt ‘Harry Potter (books, EWE), Draco/Luna, bittersweet’ 112 words. PG.
as if we were other people
“Look where you’re go-“ Draco’s words stop as abruptly as he did when Luna Lovegood, of all people, bumped into him.
“Oh, I beg your pardon, Draco,” she says, as if they crossed paths every day, and the worst of it is, she clearly means it, as if she were never a prisoner in his family’s dungeon, and owed him every courtesy. To make matters worse, she looks well, eyes dancing with a secret only she knows, and his body reacts as if Luna Lovegood were any attractive witch from an old magical family - he hasn’t got laid for far too long, that must be it - and he still can’t speak.
For the prompt ‘harry potter, ginny weasley, size is no guarantee of power’ 80 words. Universal.
The Little One
When she was just about fully grown, Ginny faced older, taller witches and wizards and stood her ground the best she could. On Quidditch pitches all over the country, she’s faced opponents who were bigger and burlier than even her brothers, and gripped her broom before flying right at them if that was the right move. But holding baby James in his own nursery for the first time, it’s this little one who has the power to undo her completely.
For the prompt ‘10 Things I Hate About You, Kat Stratford (and optionally Patrick), any’ (Kat, Mandella, Kat/Patrick). 102 words. Universal.
Options
Kat and Mandella haggle over Kat’s title: maid of honor (no, but Kat has to suck it up when Bianca is the bride), chief wedding attendant (no, because Kat laughs), best woman (acceptable compromise). They negotiate over whether Kat will get to make a speech (very little of it, strictly speaking, is in iambic pentameter and most of it is advice from Kat to the groom, which somehow makes her oldest friend cry). Kat takes her time deciding whether she’ll take up Mandella’s suggestion that she brings Patrick along as her plus one (she does, and he grins as she and the bride pogo to Sleater-Kinney).
For the prompt ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Kira + any, any’ 62 words,. Universal.
Entreaty
She prays for the station and for Bajor, for protection against the threats she knows of and the ones she does not. She prays for wisdom for her commanding officer, but also for the Emissary. Kai Winn, though - today, again, Kira settles on entreating the Prophets for the grace to pray for her as easily as she did for Kai Opaka.
For the prompt ‘lotr, sigrid, queen!sigrid’ at three sentence fic. Triple fill. AU. 256 words. PG. Summary: Three ways Sigrid became queen.
Hail, Sigrid Queen
When the midwife handed Bard his firstborn, and he breathed out her name, 'Sigrid', he hoped for a brighter future for her. A few hours later, he held this little scrap of life knowing she would be his only child and he her only parent. He could not have imagined, standing there in Laketown, grief and joy mingled in his breast, that in many years’ time, he would leave Dale safe under her rule.
When the news came that Bain had fallen, Bard's vision grew dim and he withdrew; it was his eldest daughter who straightened up her head first and gave the orders that he could not utter, who spoke to her father gently until he came back to them. She did not break out weeping until she was alone with her sister. The people did not forget what she had done for them in that hour of loss and confusion, and stood ready to obey their new Queen when her father eventually followed his son and fathers.
When Fíli, sister-son of Thorin Oakenshield, was made King under the Mountain, his wife Sigrid, daughter of Bard of Dale, became his Queen. No Dwarf thought her shoulders too frail to help bear some of her husband's burdens that day, as perhaps some had upon the occasion of their wedding. As their princess, Sigrid had shown herself worthy of all the honour their finest craftsmen could bestow upon her, for all the gold and jewels she was adorned with told a tale that any Dwarf could read.
