And the first TV show I decide to post about in 2021 is...

The Masked Singer

There were obviously some COVID changes, a new judge instead of Ken Jeong, although Jonathan Ross decided to replace him with the mad guessing. The first episode revealed six of the new costumes, which were mental, with me joining Davina in wondering where Swan’s head was, plus I wondered if Sausage had really thought through their alter ego. She was the best singer on first viewing. I wondered if we’d have the embarrassing spectacle of the first series of professional singers being booted off early for not being strong enough vocally - the format does favour certain types of voices. I guessed identities, of course, although I was surer about who’d get voted through by the audience. I haven’t watched many ITV shows in a while, so I had to get used to the ‘teasing’ dragged out by going to ad breaks. But I felt smug at the end, because I had thought Alien sounded like Sophie Ellis-Bextor from the off (though I’m not confident enough to post the names of most of my other guesses for now.)

Jonathan seemed to be guessing less wildly in the second episode and I got a ‘panto replacement’ vibe from the show this time around. I think I know who Harlequin is, and although The Blob was entertaining and WHAT A COSTUME - the costuming has not let down the standard at all, and if I was Rita Ora, I would probably be begging them to design costumes for me - I really wasn’t expecting him to get voted through so easily. Also, way to ignore that Delilah is a problematic song, ITV. I liked the sound of Seahorse’s voice and wasn’t as enamoured of Viking’s voice (although, again, KILLER costume) as the judges. I think the singing comes off differently in the studio to the screen. I never thought Bush Baby was Australian, and suspect Mo is right about Grandfather Clock’s identity. (Which is handy because I care so little about soccer that I will use the s-word.)

Anyway, I was surprised that Seahorse got booted by the judges, but three-quarters of them had plumped for the right person, which may be why. So, again, a successful professional singer gets voted off (I mumbled about misogyny, because the women were definitely the better singers in this episode.)

Don’t worry, although I will watch all the madness, bad puns and fake enthusiasm that ensues, I probably won’t post much if at all (well, maybe to crow if I guessed rightly) now that I’ve seen all the costumes for the first time. I’m in the camp that’s glad they found a way to bring it back.
