Binged on the first three eps of the second season - 2.1 Scattered, 2.2 Valley of Darkness 2.3 Fragged
A study in weak leadership, as Adama was well out of commission, Tigh was in charge (and at least recognised that he never wanted it and wasn’t good at it, classic XO, even if his ambitious missus doesn’t see it), contrasted with Laura flickering in and out of action, and Lee. On Kobol, the same played out with ‘L.T,’ waaaaay out of his depth and later going crazy, with Tyrrell helped/hindered by Kallie and Gaius at various points, suggesting a different way of doing things. Lots of military vs. civilian, male vs. female and officer vs enlisted tensions there. Not to mention the Cylons.
Six revealed that the baby (the most unconvincing baby when dream!Adama held it) was somehow going to be hers and Gaius’s, even though she’s rarely corporeal. Maybe I’m trying too hard to stick to my original theory, but maybe it’ll be Fake!Sharon and Helo’s baby? (Though Starbuck made the excellent point that Fake!Sharon might have been lying.) Otherwise, I am totally with Gaius on finding it all too mch of a headscratcher. He also learned about a grisly backstory for Kobol, which didn’t help LT, but nobody else saw the skulls. (But where did the gods go?)
On Caprica, for the brief time we were there (some storylines appeared in the first ep, where it was all additional complexity and one or two new faces) and then got deferred, Starbuck wasn’t wrong, if not particularly kind, but lost big points by getting so into arguing with Helo over his ‘toaster’ babymama that she lost situational awareness and now she, Apollo’s arrow and Helo are stuck on Caprica. Interesting to see her home, and I was glad she really didm have something to pick up there. But obviously, a truck ain’t going to get the back to space (and Galactica and the fleet have shifted) to return Apollo’s arrow to Roslin, who badly needs it.
Roslin was great until she went into withdrawal, but it was a little satisfying that she showed Tigh (and Ellen) up. Nice development on their religious jailor. Nice too to have the time given to Billy and Dee.
I have to talk about the medic with the non-American accent! Finally, someone else. Also, so much sympathy for her having to step up and do a suregon’s hob, though it occurred to me that the old smoking doctor is going to have to train her and others, a la the pilots, who had their moments.
Lots of Apollo’s bare arms and shoulders. He went a little too sassy with Tigh (under great provocation), but it’s clear that the whole command crew know about Tigh’s drinking, which is so not helpful as he blundered into politics and all. Stubborn loyalty will only help so much.
The flashbacks were…well, they worked emotionally in explaining why Tigh holds Adama in such regard, but the way it was shot couldn’t detract from the unconvincing wigs.
And Gaeta doing his best to make up for his mistake! Such a bi risk to network the computers. (I mean, he’s shifted onto my list of potential Cylons nonetheless.)
The boarding episode was very creepy, and I don’t know that we’ve fully felt the ramifications of all the killed redshirts for the Galactica yet, because there is so much else going on. And now the survivors from Kobol have returned, with the lie that binds them (didn’t Kallie have a crush on LT? Clearly that went as he pushed her beyond her limits on what everyone but him could see was a suicide mission. But she’d been really impressive before, keeping it together mostly.)
