Strictly - the week before Blackpool

Claudia in a sensible black dress with white piping, Tess in a short one-shoulder gold mess she couldn’t walk in, Shirley in something relatively blah, Craig in blue again and Motsi in a cool pattern. Claudia wins it.

Lots of black or practically black outfits when you saw all the contestants together.

Alex and NEIL did a jive, which I really enjoyed. Her improvement continued with her returned partner, it was sharp, just as strong throughout and fun. (I would love for Neil to choreograph her dancing with him and Kevin next week. And clearly Oti didn’t gossip to her sister about a certain kiss all over the tabloids last year or Motsi wouldn’t have given that note.)

Clara Amfo came on to fangirl Claudia and possibly read the Ts and Cs. I dunno. I popped into the kitchen.

A clever and effective opening for Mike’s paso. I liked the mood throughout, and we ended with a Katya choreographic flourish. As ever, he’s well-drilled, but too stiff, as expected, and I could understand the criticism, though the observations of the former ballroom dancer judges was interesting. In a way, it doesn’t matter how he did, we all know he’ll be in the dance-off.

No pRessuRe on Karim as Amy rolled her Rs in her excitement about DRINK! But I wasn’t feeling his VW, I didn’t get a storyline (if we’re comparing with Kelvin). He was out of hold a lot, though he is good at it. I thought the second section in hold was smoother. Re: what Motsi said, yes, he’s the dancer with the most ability, but what other, less talented dancers have done with greater consistency is perhaps more impressive. And then he and Amy had a sob-fest but still got three 8s, so…

I loved that version of ‘Survivor’ (but possibly I wasn’t paying as much attention to the dance as I was with other routines). Chris is improving, although I missed the drive I want in the tango (I nodded at Bruno’s point about looking like he was walking at times). He lost steam as he went on, and there was a bit too much cutting away to the flames at the beginning. The equation of his popularity versus his ability is starting to worry me now.

I’m going to ignore the storyline and some of the ‘acting’ for Michelle’s American Smooth (although OF COURSE she’s a musical theatre kid) because the quality of the dancing was ace. She’s delectable in hold and bits like the timing of reeling Giovanni in and BAM! they’re spinning - not surprised that was the best American Smooth of the season.

A very stylish argument for more people picking theatre jazz in couples choice from Emma. No, they weren’t always in sync (under-rehearsed again?) and they took it in turns to be the most stylish dancer on the floor, plus, let’s face it, she’s no Faye from Steps.

Were they happy with 33 after last week’s rumba? Oh Claudia. This week was a bit ‘Less trying to get viewers drunk, more concentrating,’ for her.

They did the Saffron not understanding AJ’s dance terms again on the VT. Zzz. I think her dress would have been nicer without embellishment on the arms or that giant flower. Um, I started focusing on her head positioning, so I clearly wasn’t feeling their waltz (or is it them?). I found it a bit in and out, although there were moments where she was extremely graceful.

Not a surprise that Kelvin was strong on the lifts, but I loved everything in between, how relaxed he looks in Latin, the hips and rotation.

Quick look at the leaderboard and I decided to vote for Alex. And then Janette showed her commitment to the show/putting Claudia off by wearing a smoking mini train.

Week 8 results show

The opening Remembrance Sunday (featuring a future pro?) routine was good as far as these things go. I liked the case work and that they had women soldiers.

Claudia wore a suit, Tess the dress that that sparkly blue jumpsuit wanted to be except for the transparent bottom. At least Shirley’s dress went full bore for the transparency, although she might have saved it for a night when she wasn’t wearing a poppy. Motsi loves a ruffle. By playing it safe, Claudia wins again.

The round-up nicely set us up to wonder if Karim was in trouble, losing sight of the fact that nobody other than Mike had been in the dance-off, so it was a test of support. (I say ‘we’; I mean ‘me’.)

Got to say, ‘Well played. No Particular Order’. I mean, producers going for the maximum drama of their shock result. First, Karim was called safe, then Alex (and I went yay!) then Saffron inevitably, and then, Michelle was in the bottom two. SHOCKER.

I hadn’t voted for her because I thought that, in second position, she didn’t need it. I also instinctively didn’t love the housewife storyline. But even though she’s been spectacular and in the 39 club, she’s clearly in as much trouble as her fellow American Ashley was last year.

No great revelations in the interviews with the couples who were through or the judges.

I like the huskiness of Luke Evans’s voice. He looked sheepish at the end, but that’s some units shifted. I don’t know how you choreograph a ballroom number to ‘Bring Him Home’ (maybe ask Kevin Clifton) and although they hit some nice simpatico moments, Johannes and Amy’s dancing seemed divorced from the song, which was going well, for once. She had a bit of a feature night, no?

The second half of name-calling went as expected. Chris IS funny, I’ll grant, which has more to do with his survival than Karen’s hair.

The dance-off also went as expected, though I took in even more of the detail in Michelle and Giovanni’s American Smooth. Let’s not dwell on Mike not wanting to wait for the music and the excruciating dismount, but more to the kinda conga, which became the best last dance this series by default. Though possibly that happened because no-one else wanted Mike to lift them as he was threatening to do.
