Gotham 4.16 One of My Three Soups
Tantalising previouslies that gave an edited version of last week’s gunshots.
Cue a breakout at Arkham, which in and of itself is nothing special, Penguin scuttle out last week, but Jerome seemed to have got quite a few villains in on his scheme. I missed out on Jarvis Tetch (the Hatter?) being introduced in season 3, but I enjoyed the sequence.
I noticed Ben McKenzie was directing again, as Harvey expositioned at Jim, back on his first shift, to keep him to the plan and be the captain the force needed, but just as Jim was thinking Bullock was going to be a stone in his shoe, he agreed to be his back-up. They lampshaded their stupid tendency to go off on their own. Tetch did some gruesome killing and threatening, and for the actor to speak normally and then LOUDLY. Did he always do that?
Bruce and Selina were cute as he asked for a favour back, although he clearly needs to learn lockpicking behind his back. (Actually, doesn’t he know lockpicking by this point? Aww, he just wanted to hang.) I’m saying nothing about Bruce’s acting skills or Harper’s gullibility.
Meanwhile, Tabby gave Barbara some tough love (and confirmed weeks had passed since the last episode), forcing her to remember Ra’s bringing her back to life, telling her she’d be the Demon’s Head and in charge of the League of Shadows. Oo-er. Turned out her glowing hand was a beacon.
And Gotham needs the League of Shadows like it needs a hole in the head that should be fatal, seeing as - in an epically macabre move, Tetch had hypnotised row after row of people to stand up on the edge of buildings i.e. Batman’s future perches. Jim asked how, Harvey asked what they were going to do about it.
Bruce opened up to Selina about his rationale re Jerome (again, backstory I missed), she called him on his ego, I laughed and it truly could have been the build-up to a kiss, but no, he booted her out of his car. She was amused. I was amused. Adorable.
They’d set up Jarvis’s hypnotism being on the radio via Babs and Tabby, but Harvey got to be the self-sacrificing hero to find the right radio station (but how will switching it off stop those already hypnotised? All of them.)
I missed out on Jerome’s uncle or the business between them in season 3, but crazy laughs clearly run in the family.
I hoped Selina took the long way home seeing as the League of Shadows had turned up. Also, what did Tabby have in mind with ‘preparing for them’? Setting out dips or clean linen?
Jim wanting the police cars to broadcast a new form of hypnotism took care of my quibble.
The power shifts continued in the diner, although the trouble with rescuing a psycho villain like Jerome is that he will kill other people. Though it was clear his uncle had abused him, and helped create the protoJoker who reacted as Jerome did.
Whatever, Selina saved Bruce. AWWWWWW! Though she’s now on Jerome’s radar. Boo. Also, aiming for a non-lethal, disabling shot is a perfectly viable option that wouldn’t have got Bruce riled or let Jerome escape. I’m just saying. But, anyway, we got even more classic BatCat UST and a bit of softening from her as she saw that he had the world on his shoulders.
Just as I was thinking of the parallels between Babs and Lee in their new leadership roles, and also that the assassin she killed wasn’t a great ad for the League of Shadows’ skillz, we had a women power moment. (At first, I thought it was the Real League of Shadows disposing of shoddy fakes.) Admittedly, Tabby and the sisters were protesting against a centuries old group of assassins. But, sure. Why not?
Jim very sweetly found a solution to the hypnosis. (I was thinking along the lines of fooling them that the clocks were striking 13 somehow.) I thought it was thematically appropriate, given Bruce and Selina’s storyline and, of course, his resumed partnership with Harvey. Some very nice beats in his scene with Harvey - McKenzie is proving himself to be accomplished multitasker.
And Jarvis’s cronies busted him out - it was indeed clear that Tetch had been a big old distraction. Jerome looks good in the suit and has, as ever, been a joy to watch. We didn’t see much of the Scarecrow, so I’d like that before they turn on each other. Interesting that Babs was assembling her gang of troublemakers, which was explicitly gendered, thus making it obvious that Jerome’s gang is all male.
