Writing and watching

At the start of the week, I posted Natasha versus the Marketing Ploy. Marvel Cinematic Universe. PG. Natasha Romanoff, ensemble. 503 words. Written for the prompt ‘MCU, Natasha Romanoff+Any, To present the Avengers in a more 'cuddly' light, plushies are made of them. Natasha is not amused.’ at comment_fic

I wrote the first draft pretty quickly, left it, because I needed to check a couple of things, and it took me about a week to get around this. I enjoyed coming up with the details of the scenario. I couldn’t come up with a title I liked, but eventually realised I could pinch the summary I’d come up with. Turns out it’s the first MCU gen I’ve written.

I also caught up on the Humans series 3 finale:

Humans 3.8

Turned out ‘Odi’ is now ‘ViOdi’ AKA The Synth Who Sleeps. And she totally asked Odi’s permission before euthanizing him and taking over his body. She was a bit gnomic, as Niska made a few decent ‘Oi, who do you think you are?’ points. Will Tudor does beatific well.

I still think they could have used Mattie’s hacking skills to find out about/publicise Basswood, and it was a bit glaring that nobody was asked to remove their phones before entering. Neeha was obviously trying to get enough incriminating stuff on the record, but I thought she was giving herself away, as Neil looked pensive about his role in mass murder. So, when her orange eyes minder took away the phone, I felt vindicated.

Also, of course Laura would be near enough to see all this unfold but not to get seen herself. (Yeah, right.)

Max made an…interesting pitch to remain Leader.

Now I read the scene with the synth therapist/health care assistant as Mattie deciding to keep her kid, and I’d moved on to wondering about her giving birth etc in prison. In hindsight, I misread the scene, but I was reading all Mattie and Leo’s scenes through the ‘parenting’ lens.

The visual of the synths dying because of the surge and the use of orange eyes in their demise was powerful.

As Laura was trying to make up to her family for recent past fails, Neil turned up with his folder. I guess the writers decided to forget the family hacker to give us all the personal contact.

Mia made it, but not in time for everyone. Still, she gave Leo some parenting tipsm

Phase 3 began, making wee Sam want to lash out. What did he think he was going to do?

Another strong visual of the solidarity of the synths, although I didn’t think they’d stop the wound up crowd.

Laura did enough to disrupt Basswood a little.

The tragedy of the mechanic was that beating up the Green Eyes wasn’t going to get rid of the Orange Eyes and their utility for the powers that be and humans.

We had some Hawkins bonding - and a very nice moment after Joe’s ‘It’s enough’ to Laura, as observed by Neil.

And of course Sam and Stanley had alternate responses to being attacked.

Then the show killed Mia! I didn’t expect that (Leo possibly), although in hindsight, she is the perfect martyr figure for the movement.

ViOdi’s whole ‘Leo’s blood is somehow magic’ spiel lost me. Niska as the leader, Niska having the extra knowledge after learning fear, yes, because Max has failed, but this is the show going into science fantasy land (with so much Christian imagery). And I am dubious.

I loved Mattie telling Sophie the truth instead of lying to comfort her as Toby had. I interpreted it as preparing to play the mother.

Sam and Stanley’s hide and seek and Stanley’s further growth showing the effect of Mia’s legacy were good.

I wanted Leo to look to Mattie, but by the time he did, it was too late, although I proceeded to find out I’d misread Mattie’s intentions. She bargained hard and smartly.

But enter souped-up Niska with a huge burden to place on Mattie’s shoulders. (And bad maths, because wasn’t Leo the half-human, half-synth, so although I accept the baby can heal and be strong after him, what she said was wrong…)

Ah well, the show has always been (over)ambitious.
