The First Four Don’t Count: shakeweightless (Ann Veal-centric ficlet, teen)
So good. This made me laugh/yelp out loud.
Jupiter Ascending
starlight in my veins: shiniesqueen (Tsing-centric gen)
Very credible backstory for Tsing. I enjoyed the different perspective this offered on some of the issues raised in the film, although structurally, I could have done with a stronger link to the events of the film.
The Man From UNCLE (2015)
you built me dreams instead: youareiron_andyouarestrong (Gaby/Ilya modern day university AU)
Really lovely translation of the characters to the new milieu.
The Martian
BREAKING NEWS: sevenfoxes (Beth-centric Beth/Chris (background Mark/Annie). Mature. Long.)
I really enjoyed this story about what happens after they return to Earth. Beth is so sympathetic, even when she's not helping herself, and the Beth/Chris is utterly compelling. I enjoyed the use of the press speculation/accuracy, both for giggles, and for how the media scrutiny affected them. (A few SPaG errors.)
Marvel Cinematic Universe
Carpe Noctum - Ad Astra Per Aspera (A Rough Road Leads to the Stars): arcanelegacy (Post-Iron Man 2, Pepper-centric, Pepper/Tonyish, canon-typical violence, longish)
An honourable addition to the Pepper-saves-Toron ny tradition - this fandom brought out the good action-adventure writers, didn't it? It should be noted that the characterisation of Natasha is pre-Avengers.
progress reports, pancakes, and paper planes: such-heights (post-Avengers Nat and ensemble gen)
Such a fun team-bonding fic. I appreciated the ladies getting on getting the attention they did, too.
Nerve
Broad-Shouldered Beasts: garrideb (Vee-centric, ensemble, gen, teen as per the film)
This is a great song for Vee's story. This vid captures many aspects of 'Nerve', especially the friendships, and made great choices to change the chronology for the emotional throughline.
Pacific Rim
Real Love: gss42x (Mako/Raleigh vid)
I like the build-ups created to match the music and I love how the music works with movement here.
The Meeting of Your Sparks: tielan (Raleigh/Mako, AU, teen for language)
This is lovely. I liked the way the details of the AU are constructed, how they map on to canon in this world, how they are revealed. You might think 'kindergarten teacher AU = fluff' but the sweetness of Hiromi, and of Raleigh meeting Mako for the first time are balanced by grief, too. Having Raleigh observe so much about Mako through her mothering was fascinating.
Spirited Away
Ways to Go: Etnoe (Chihiro-centric gen)
Lovely. This delves deep to look at Chihiro post-canon, and how much she's grown because of what she went through. (That makes it sound heavy, but it's not, no more than the film was!)
True Grit
Bulletproof: th_esaurus (Mattie, LaBoeuf, futurefic)
This is great. It nails Mattie’s voice. I loved the subtlety, even with Mattie's directness. It conveys what the passing years have done to the characters and what they've made of them.
While You Were Sleeping
Paper & Oak: Suburban Sun (Post-movie Lucy/Jack & the Callaghans)
In a word: heartwarming. The tone of this is just right as Lucy basks in a family Christmas with Jack by her side.
