Bits and bobs

From Monday to today seems to have been swallowed up by a vortex. I’ve only had snatches online. Back on Sunday, I posted The Princess and the Dragons of Many Hues. PG. Original/Fairy Tale
Characters: A princess, her sisters, a king, a queen, a governess, servants, subjects, artists and a lover, and various dragons.
Summary: In a world where there are dragons of many hues, it took this princess to approach them.
(1,505 words.) Inspired by rather than a fill for the prompt: Fairy Tales, any, a dragon of a different colour.

It’s up at AO3, but not ff.net, because it’s not based on a particular fairy tale, and although it features some fairy tale motifs and possibly a fairy, it’s all made up. But it did come about from a comment_fic prompt in November, sort of, and the first draft was written before that original ficlet I posted in December. I had a break from it over Christmas, and was editing it, on and off.

In the first draft, which passed the 1,000 mark, most of the characters had Chinese names that I’d picked for the meaning, and then I thought they’d have more of an effect if I set them up in English. Well, that, and the options I found for the musical second sister were too on the nose, and I couldn’t call her Samantha. It hasn’t been beta read, so I hope no major errors got past me. I am aware that it ends with the potential for continuing adventures, and even before this week, I didn’t know if I’d write them.

I’ve also written a couple of fresh things this year, which are definitely fanfic. One of them I’m letting rest, the other I lost because I was dithering over a title when my laptop randomly decided to shut down. Anyway, I am still writing is my point.

Trailerwatch: At the cinema over the weekend, I saw the The Shape of Water trailer and I was left sighing dreamily. A few trailers later, they showed the one for Phantom Thread (which looks good) and it was followed by Fifty Shades Freed. The juxtaposition made me laugh, though both are about controlling men, no?

I’ve subsequently rewatched Pacific Rim. I don’t know if I’ll watch the sequel, I need to be convinced that it’s not one of those films that rip out what you loved about the original. PR got Mako Mori so right. I found I didn’t care about most of the Jaeger vs. Kaiju fights. There is a little more room for the storyline I think they’re setting up with Pentecost having a biological son than I first thought, but after Mako/Raleigh, Mako’s bond with Pentecost is my favourite relationship. My initial suspicion was that they were going to trample over that. I’m now worried about other things.

Later tonight, I’ll post my thoughts about the TV I’ve watched this week.
