The Fearless catch-up post

Episode 3

I’d missed the very end of the last episode - one of the hazards of catch-up - which I watched yonks before this one, so an additional piece of the jigsaw fell into place for me with the ‘previously’. Emma was good at her job as she faced the personal consequences of her involvement in the case. Without the audience’s advantage, she eventually remembered the American connection - her relationship with Olivia is interesting. Of course, Heather got to the latter with a threat, a woman-to-woman threat to watch out for the men who were passed over for her, and then Heather herself got threatened by the generals (for a second I thought they were literal generals).

Mrs Wild seemed ruled by her heart.

Lucy’s family are…an ITV family, if I may put it like that.

A couple of scenes that didn’t quite work, but what I loved about Emma was that she still had sympathy for people who had let her down/made bad decisions - Miriam on the basis of a misunderstanding, Kevin because he was weak.

Episode 4

Further proof that Kevin was weak in court and in making the decision on his plea (I mean, that his son had heard him admit to being a killer wasn’t going to go well, and the press would be like vultures - I was more worried about Linda’s family/vigilantes than anything, though.)

I assumed he was done for after another person and vehicle encounter before the first break. (Masterful structure.) But no, so I then presumed Kevin would survive enough for Jason to have a moment with him after Emma made up for all this…

We then had the revelation that Matthew Wild MP had a past with Heather (I thought it was left ambiguous as to whether it was personal as well as professional).

Excitements as Emma got desperate enough to work with Olivia. If shouty, demanding Miriam was annoying, although understandably under stress, her husband’s associates and he himself were plain scary.

Emma saying she was scared was a big deal given the title.

But as she told Pulling, who was aware of what a big hole he was in, she’s in a whole other place since seeing Kevin try to kill himself.

I couldn’t believe she actually got let into the States but I’m probably too used to less realistic, more flashy shows. Good flashback, so her dead love was probably the other party in the pregnancy referred to in the previous episode. While it was good that she had an associate, it was a shame she went all by herself for a singularly unprofitable encounter with Logan. I didn’t believe he did it, but he obviously Knew Something, but there was no time to reach him.

Episode 5

I’d be all over the dynamic between Emma and her ex-cop sidekick (i.e. shipping them) if she didn’t have a SO (MIA) and he wasn’t gay. And in the midst of all the drama, it seemed like he forgot to pass on Miriam’s warning, and Emma wasn’t thinking very far ahead about giving up Sattar.

Logan’s boss showed dangerous signs of independent thought for a military type . Anyway, Emma got a little more from Linda’s boyfriend, although it wasn’t proof. She did enough to rattle Heather, especially by investigating with Olivia.

At the end of the ep, my working assumption was that Matthew was the driver who ran Linda down.

Emma’s boyfriend stood up to her ultimatum, and made a fair point about her not being able to give up her clients (when she was questioned by the Americans, she was a pretty good TV lawyer), although he did do an emotional runner on her at a very bad time.

Episode 6

Angst after Kevin’s death and a nice use of the central idea of the titles in Emma’s recurring nightmare.

I had got as far as wondering if the missus knew, because of my Matthew theory and her response in Linda’s bedroom but for her to be RACHEL!! Was not expecting that. And suddenly the nature of Matthew’s involvement (although who WAS driving?) became murkier.

Ramping up the tension as Emma decided what to do about Kevin’s case, becoming more and more aware of the consequences of her decision. I’m still really liking Olivia’s relationship with Emma.

And, as she’d been made aware previously, there was no backup for Heather from ‘the generals’.

Then the question of what Matthew knew about Rachel/Laura seemed was answered (although did she tell him, would he have recognised her?), although his point about Heather arranging for Emma’s assassination happening outside their house raising suspicions was A1 - wouldn’t people want to know why Emma was there? So, there he was with his mixed motivations, and it turned out Emma had trusted Olivia again, although for all the sleight of hand, we did see a bomb being attached to the car, and I’m not sure how that was removed/made safe seeing as Matthew would have been passing so there was a very small window of opportunity. I was also wondering, even if Wild wasn’t, about the neighbours hearing his shouts.

Anyway, it was satisfying that Olivia’s subordinate, who showed good cop instincts, got to nab Heather, and we heard a little more of Emma’s history, although they never did give us the closure with her father. I wonder if there’ll be another series, because McCrory was ace, although the attempt to be current and relevant was overtaken by recent events in the political sphere, at least…
