Is it me and the media I consume...

...or is Dawson's Creek having a moment right now? It was a question that was already bubbling in my mind, but boiled over when I saw a Dawson's Creek alum appear in a significant cameo in The Edge of Seventeen (good, I laughed, I winced at the teenageriness of it all, Stanfield deserves all the reconition for her performance). The significance was because of the casting.

It's also that Michelle Williams is in a film that's an awards contender, and is, by all reports, good in it herself and the nostalgic vibe - a reaction to 2016, and if Gilmore Girls came back, what next? I'm sure I read that she was asked about Dawson's Creek returning and her response was 'No.' Understandable that as i. Jen died and ii. Dawson's Creek's finale was a satisfying one, really.

The only way it could work would be as a next generational thing, and thinking of the timing of the finale, that could work. But is there really and truly an appetite?

In an interview with Total Film, Williams talked about how badly she felt at the reaction to Jen. Thing is, which I don't know if the people that made the show appreciated at the time, the girls watching (and it was mainly girls) identified the most with Joey (not Dawson even). Her pining was theirs/ours in a way Dawson's wasn't, and Jen was the object of the pining at the beginning, and it was always going to be difficult to change those settings. That's my recollection anyway.
