Catching up with the Gilmore Girls

While the rest of the world is getting ready for Netflix to show the new series, I’m catching up on season 4. The backstory is that I saw a few episodes of the show on Freeview, really enjoyed them and got the DVDs, season by season, to watch it in order, but I watched season 3 in cough - well, I’ve looked up and seen I didn’t mention watching it on lj, so let’s say a few years.

Now that I’d finished Deep Space Nine season 2, this was the next TV show on DVD on my literal ‘to watch’ pile (at this rate...) I rewatched the last episode of season 3 to reorient myself and then dived in. It’s really enjoyable, the balance of wise-cracking comedy and drama works. I was trying to explain to a male Family Member how much I enjoyed watching smart, relatable women and girls interact with each other. There’s also nostalgia (it’s 2003 and people still had pagers) as Rory goes to university - a few years after I did, while both she and Lorelai have to deal with the separation.

In the first episode, Rory made me laugh more than I expected, and in the second, having arrived at Yale, she freaked out (perhaps because Paris was her room-mate) and dragged Lorelai back to stay the night and ease the transition, which she did with aplomb. But Lorelai eventually had to go home to her empty nest in Stars Hollow and I wanted to hug her, because she isn’t a momma’s girl and when she was Rory’s age, she had a toddler, not the college experience.

It’s a little weird to see Melissa McCarthy as Sookie again, who is so different from her big screen persona, but proof she’s got range. I was a bit underwhelmed at the introduction of Jason/Digger, especially because he was in the credits for his episode.

Then we had a Stars Hollow set episode in ‘Chicken or Beef’, which made me very happy. If Stars Hollow were real, I would go there. Apart from the quirk, Rory was forced to deal with her feelings about Dean’s wedding (oh, Dean, should you be getting married to someone else when you’re still not over her? I’m not a Rory/Dean or Rory/Jess shipper, btw, although Lorelai/Luke, yes, so much). After surviving Taylor’s continued petty tyranny, Lorelai got a step closer to her dream of opening the Dragonfly Inn!! FEELINGS!

Also, it was a reminder that the dialogue is so fast-paced - it’s not just about the back and forth, but the speeches - with it’s own rhythym. And I do not get several of the references, like the Jimmy Carter thing when Emily tried to force Rory to stay at their house.
