The Good Wife 6.11 Hail Mary

Setting aside the ending, which I wouldn’t be if I’d typed this up immediately after watching the episode, I thought the more straightforward jumping from Alicia, Cary, Kalinda to Diane (and masterful use of mobiles as we use them and as a form of (mis)communication) worked better than what they attempted in the previous episode.

KALINDA. Two big ‘what have you done?’ moments, writ large on Archie Panjabi’s face. And it’s still complicated between her and Cary, but what she’ll do for him - has done - is huge, and I don’t know if the metadata will come back to haunt her, but Bishop will. As it has for all of them. He was such a big cat around her, and yet she still turned to him.

Loved the sound of the clock they had going in the hotel room where Cary was being prepped by the consultant. Strong performance from Czuchry again. I’d only had two days with the possibility of Cary going to jail, like the character, but I think it was meant to be a week. Still Cary’s line about always wanting to be a lawyer and increasing terror at what lay ahead were spot on, as was the overshadowing sense of unfairness, so the apology from the judge for all that’s happened to him this season was quietly powerful.

The next time Cary walks into a courtroom to defend a case is going to be epic.

I’m going to contradict myself and admit that having had extra Judge and Geneva in the previous episode added resonance here - although Diane needs an episode where she’s front and centre soon, I think. (Plus I realised that poor Robin has been squeezed by both Kalinda and Marissa in terms of her role and the show’s need for her. I missed her because ‘everyone’, including Other Cary, was on the case.)

The implications of what Castro’s done, the firm’s links with Bishop and IF Alicia wins S.A. could be very meaty in the long term.

So, to get back to the ending !!!! Couldn’t Alicia have settled on jumping up and down? Kissing Elfman, who works for her, like that? At the least totally going to lead to even more awkwardness!? And beyond noting when he whispered ‘Congratulations, you graduated’ that there were two very attractive faces in the same frame, really - maybe you could argue that they’ve both got the will to win cases/elections thing going for them - there was no build up as she’d been busy doing prep debating as foreplay with Finn. I did yowl ‘Hel-LO’ when we were first introduced to Elfman, but they’ve mainly been playing it professional, and I have just been enjoying the eyecandy without needing emotional undercurrents between him and Alicia.

Because although in one sense it was just the expression of euphoria at the news about Cary, and we’ve seen a kiss like this played out by various other characters in other years, the powerful woman/man who’s helping her get more power dynamic is rare. And this isn’t the show to let it lie.

So, let’s see what next. Of course, up til then, Elfman had slightly seemed boxed in his dynamic with Eli, with Marissa as the amused observer/voice of reason. Once Peter muscled into the prep debate, and Eli, desperate Peter/Alicia shipper by default, defined himself as the Florricks’ guy, as Elfman pointed out, he’s actually Peter’s guy. That makes Elfman the guy on Alicia’s side. But Alicia didn’t know about any of that.

Ah well, I thought Peter was going to get riled about the Alicia/Finn UST, but instead, and more interestingly, it was about his ego, his reputation and Alicia carving out her own identity. Ha.

The Alicia-Cary stuff was really touching. And her coat at the end of the episode was excellent.
