Caught up on the following last night:
The Mentalist
7.5 The Silver Briefcase
Directed by Simon Baker, which explains the comparative lack of Jane in the last episode. Involving opening with the silence, Lisbon and Cho (obviously) training and being a good team after all their years of working together, and then the reveal of our killer being a respectable colonel.
I LOVED that Lisbon responded to Jane’s suggestion in the last ep that he might find it difficult to walk away from this job too, and that they didn’t let the suggestion dangle - deadlines focus minds! And there was a killer for Jane to try to catch...
Lots of nice character moments like aww, Lisbon’s little smile at the pretending they were moving in together and how well they bounced off each other at the house. Jane making Wylie’s crush obvious, so Vega can’t miss or avoid it. How terrible Wylie was at subtly checking out the African art, compared with Lisbon observing the suspect and making a snap judgment ‘You asked about her bag, because you think that’s what women talk about’, which is when I presumed Jane was fighting back about getting Lisbon to move on - he’s definitely been teaching her all the mentalist skills of late.
Cho’s line about cleaning guns properly not quickly (yeah, your relationship with Vega is totally platonic mentor/mentee stuff, sir).
I don’t get what the inuniverse reason was for Wylie driving during Vega’s red-light to clothes-drop test. I could believe that he volunteered or that Jane suggested him fo maximum awakwardness, but Lisbon should have been the choice, less awkwardness all round and she wouldn’t have freaked out at doing a grid search.
Otherwise this story came together well, from the Colonel calling off the case/giving Jane a new challenge (which was another Lisbon in red scene, btw, followed by mirroring costumes which was apt for them putting on an united front as the other couple unravelled. Even the glancing handholding added to that!)
I’d enjoyed the different setting of the training building just as a change of scene, but I liked how it worked as the setting for the final (taped) confession too.
So, who did it? I was slightly biased towards it being him, and it does matter, JANE, although the case containing the note about the cat was a nice callback to Vega’s comment and a nod to Schroedinger’s cat.
Was showing us the building as Jane and Lisbon left just the actor wanting to be a stylish director - I think we can take it as read that Lisbon and Jane will leave the FBI at the end of this series - or is it going to lead to something like a big scene using the geography? Anyway, Jane got Lisbon to entertain the premise of them leaving, if only to argue against it. (See also Jane not having a plan to the killer’s plan.) And I think we just ended on a Sherlockian reference, which was nifty.
Pretty good episode.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
2.8 USPIS
Much better for me than the Halloween meh - a good Scully and Hitchcock opener.
I enjoyed watching Rosa in charge of that taskforce of hers, and the Rosa-Jake stuff was juicy (borderline Jake/Rosa!?)
Jack Danger and his (dull) self-importance worked well with Jake and his wingman. Plus USPIS facing off against the cops was such a ridiculous David versus Goliath professional rivalry. And then one punchline was an old printer
Did we know that Amy smoked? (Yes, I’m disappointed in her!)
Anyway, the other three sharing their addictions and trying to help her were funny - the ice bath was impressive from Fumero and Crews. And like the Rosa-Jake stuff, it was about the precinct being there for each other, as they’d failed to be for Scully, but he has Hitchcock, so that’s all right.
My favourite bit was the flashback to Holt’s dalliance with gambling on horse racing, though.
2.9 The Road Trip
Again, a good opener, and three pretty decent strands. We haven’t really seen just Boyle and Holt interact before.
Rosa looked vile - the question from Gina of whether she had cholera or typhus wasn’t so far off.
And then Sophia was cool, the dolls were creepy, Jake was trying to do a nice thing and Amy claiming to be normal...yeah. Not to mention Teddy pulling that piece of truth out in the middle of the break up. Oh, Sophia, maybe you are too mature for Jake...
There was a slight horror vibe going on. I yelped twice, at Rosa smashing the window and Amy taking over the wheel as she was about to crash the car.
