I have yet to see the Avengers 2 trailer, but I have seen the Atlantis one. They’ve been promising that the second series will be better. I’m not holding out my breath for their addressing all the problems in series 1, although I do think they should manage better FX. What I gleaned from the trailer was:
- a lack of shirtless Jason, which seems odd;
- Queen Ariadne, zzzz;
- no Medusa (if only she hadn’t been so wonderful in her introductory episode, then I wouldn’t have minded so much about what they did to her), no sign of Atalanta either, although I do hope she returns;
- lots of the Oracle which makes sense because she’s played by Juliet Stephenson and her prophesising makes excellent trailer fodder, and quite a bit of Pasiphae.
Apparently War IS Coming but the trailer closed with Three Amigos banter.
I took the advice and watched Marvel's Agents of SHIELD last night.
2.1 Shadows
Not bad, I liked the strutting confidence of the opening in the past. Well of course I’d like seeing Peggy and some of the Howling Commandos, and I am very much looking forward to Agent Carter - although there’s no guarantee of where it will air in the UK. Surely the HYDRA agents should have been speaking German - and while having Reed Diamond turn up is good, it’s all a bit Sebastian Shaw.
But the same mood stayed in the ‘present’. Granted, there was a bit too much exposition, clunkily introduced, but there were a lot of new faces and the situation had mostly moved on logically from where we’d left them.
Skye’s new hair-do - what is it, there to prove she’s upgraded to badass? - is better than Adrian Pasdar’s character’s moustache.
Fitz’s aphasia and frustration at not being entirely himself was pretty sympathetic, and it’s good that he didn’t entirely shake off everything he’d been through. Add that Simmons is being all sympathetic friend but no more...(Oh yes, I fell for that!)
Ward was utterly creepy, but I liked how Skye handled herself with that, but obviously repeated contact is going to be hard.
I thought there was some Tripp/Skye flirting, certainly from his side, which was interesting.
Creel and his gifts were an effective villain for now - visually and especially given the artefact.
The speechifying and the self-righteousness, mostly from Coulson, riled me a little. I was disappointed that they killed off Lucy Lawless’s character, but not bad at all.
I caught up with that on the laptop and watched the next episode live on the TV, which really works better with this show, but I doubt it's ever going to become appointment TV for me.
2.2 Heavy is the Head
Although Simmons as seen by Fitz is fun - clearly Henstridge is having a ball - I don’t get why she’d leave everyone (hi, Skye’s abandonment issues) in the hope of helping Fitz. Where she gone off to? What about her devotion to the cause? She had better be doing some vital science thing or be on a secret mission.
The development of Hunter has been intriguing. Apparently I like the type when played by actors who remind me of Jonny Lee Miller?
I was pleased to see Rayna rather than not and pleased that she survived the obelisk. So, we’ve been introduced to two shadowy players. I suppose we’re meant to wonder if Kyle McLachlan’s daughter could be Skye.
I rolled my eyes less at Coulson, I like the general competence of May and Skye, and while I don’t think the show has become amazing, it’s definitely improved. We’ll see if it lasts, and if the balance between foregrounding the characters the show thinks are important and giving characters I like the most enough to do works.
