TGW 5.16 The Last Call

The cushion I was hudding never left my arms during this episode, basically. During ad breaks, my head may have dived into it. I knew it was going to be quietly devastating...but watching the way that the news spread, and everyone’s shock and each individual response built it all up.

Nonetheless, the episode was mainly about Alicia, Kalinda and Diane, which was so very right, and how they interacted while processing, well, having to process their grief very differently. Alicia was haunted (my take on the message was that Will was going to tell her about Dubeck, probably, given their previous conversation.) Then I kept wondering if Kalinda was strong enough to do what she was pushing herself to do what she was doing. And Diane - ‘firing’ a client, but I agree that if their positions were reversed, Will would have been loyal.

I liked the parallels between David Lee and Eli, both having to do the ‘dirty work’ because that’s their role, even if they don’t want to. There was also the questioning of whether Will was a good man and different people’s different takes on it.

Will Cary admitting as part of the deposition that he was going after the doctor not go down badly if the case comes to court?

So sad and so exquisitely well done.

Agents of honestly, this episode was all about how SHIELD is defunct these days, PHIL

1.20 Nothing Personal

I enjoyed this one a fair bit, again. Most of all, I thoroughly enjoyed Maria Hill turning up and her conversation with May (point me to fics where Maria has more conversations with Pepper, Natasha and Melinda. Or film it, frankly.) We got more of an explanation for her thinking in joining Stark Industries. And she was competent and made up for mistakes when she realised she’d made them, although she kept plenty of secrets, showing Ward and us exactly why Fury made her his deputy.

I know that someone saw her (and they wanted the cool visual) and she wanted to see what Fury had left behind straight away, but I do hope that May went back to close Coulson’s grave and fill the hole back in after. Or that there’ll be some comeback and Coulson still being alive will be revealed - are they actually holding out for a reveal in the next Avengers film or something, because I’m sure the audience’s response will be ‘yes, he’s been in a TV show for a while now’ while the heroes look self-involved? I understand why Coulson wants to keep it on the down-low, even more so now after he’s seen the video of himself (how did they specifically wipe the memory of doing that).

As for the meat of the episode, well, I found myself in the position of rooting for Skye throughout (that’s new!) Even if Ward thinks he means what he says that he cares for her (who knows? who cares?) he’s clearly so damaged that she’s well out of that. Even though the analogy wasn’t subtle (HYDRA = Nazis so the volk who help them aren’t good soldiers they’re...), it was fun to have Mike/Deathlok throw Ward’s words right back at him. Er, note also that Skye is still trying to reach Mike, while she’s mainly angry and sickened by Ward. Whether that response to Ward last, I don’t know.

A good barometer for how much I’m enjoying an episode is if I enjoy Coulson’s quips. I did.

Leo got hugely emotional, although as soon as he did during the examination, I felt more for Simmons - examining a dead body killed by a team member she’d patched up, hours ago, and also been betrayed by, thanks. But then, they sort of forgot to give Simmons, Tripp and even Coulson a response to that, beyond exhausted staring into the pool. I think there should be more. But then, I’ve often been irritated by how the show foregrounds some character’s emotional response to some things, while breezing over matters that should be equally huge.

I think that the wolf in the sheepfold being unmasked has made things much more interesting against the background of the ruins of SHIELD. So we’re looking at, I hope, a thrilling run to the finale.
