The Mentalist 2.10 'Throwing Fire'

Not one I'll make an effort to rewatch, which is not a diss on the episode as such, because I thought it was well-crafted, but not concentrating on Lisbon. Grace had her Moment of Awesome, and the Jane flashbacks lived up to what I'd hoped when I read up the premise of the ep. Did he leave then? It was coming, because he was wanting to go his own way and perhaps even believing that he was better at this than his father, plus moral qualms (that poor girl, the contrast between her and the golden boy blazing health!), yeah JANE'S MORAL QUALMS would tip over the love and need for approval. A part of me wants to see that father again. So maybe he could hang about for a bit and then go, if we have other flashbacks. Good job on casting the young Jane and getting him to ape the mannerisms. At one point, I hoped it wouldn't be a father/son killer, but The Theme had to have it's way.

I don't know what to make of the faking the concussion thing. All the time? I don't care enough to HAVE to rewatch it to figure it out to my own satisfaction. Anyway, Jane got to play with leaves (as they mentioned the fall in 2.03 and again now, I'm wondering about the timeline. I have consciously not decided to think about the geography of California and this show, but timeline might be important) and the leaf-blower - both striking scenes. I know Jane uses the 'you're thinking I'm glad he can't read minds' as a default and I also liked Lisbon's read of his using deflecting questions. She's on to him up to a point. See also the zinger; it's Jane's not-quite-what-you-were-expecting reactions to her that add to their charm. There was that plus Jane's behaviour: 'look at the witness I have brought you! Well, Cho and I, but I told him who to run after.' Otherwise, I covered the show in two paragraphs! When does that ever happen after the first time I watch it?

Also, if you want to see a satirical take on consumerism and are a fan of David Duchovny's, The Joneses is worth seeing. I thought that he and Demi Moore were really well cast and that it was well made. A reviewer said the premise of the film would make a good TV show, and I agree. All the 'family members' and more of their neighbours could be developed and things that were shown, of necessity, quickly in a film that was under two hours could be shown happening more gradually and with more depth.
