The Empire awards

Mar 30, 2009 18:42

Yeah, further confirmation that I won't be going back to buying the magazine in a hurry (though Total Film's choice of pictures for its feature on Lesbian Vampire Killers isn't doing much for me either. Or lack of female reviewers). I heard on the radio on Friday that it was the Empire awards this weekend, and I thought 'oh yeah, well, The Dark Knight's going to do well'. And it did, and I don't begrudge it exactly (though Wall-E is the better film), because Nolan and Bale (and the whole cast and crew) did a good job, but got understandably overwhelmed re awards by Ledger's turn and death, which allowed academies to recognise the excellence and box office of TDK without having to give too much to recognition to a superhero movie.

The results

BUT while some of the awards are 'fair enough' (especially the ones that I think the magazine staff rather than punters voted for, I don't think I voted for any of the winners (and hey, I'm already looking forward to voting my own way next year, never mind its futile, I like form filling and voting). I find some of the categories diffiult anyway, because how do you truly define genres? To me, the awards feel as typical (as chosen by the fanboy venerating bearded directors crowd) as Oscar's biased choices. And hey, I didn't see most of these films, I have no idea if RockNRolla was a return to 'form' for Guy Ritchie, or if Gemma Arterton is more than totty or if Son of Rambow was funny.
