Bones 2.10 The Headless Witch in the Woods

I still do not get why they felt like riffing off The Blair Witch Project when it's so old, but nt old enough to be retro. I mean, I watched a repeated Dawson's Creek episode that homaged TBWP a couple of months ago and it felt old when DC did that. Was it all the historical and woodsy particulate stuff that appealed to the writers?

Fortunately, I'm watching Bones for the characters (had several moments of unadulterated love for Zach and Brennan in particular) and the 'ships - I want to do an eleventyone squee over Angela/Hodgins, but I shan't. I shall merely note the difference in response when she grabbed on to him for comfort compared with Boothe and Cam. Bones (the show) isn't exactly subtle. And it's not without mis-steps. There was a moment when Jack was putting his hand around Angela's shoulder in comfort that was meant to be touching, but it just ended up looking creepy in context.

Also, well, seeing as Numb3rs is on tonight, it bears repeating that I'm irritated by the 60 min with ads format for procedural whodunnits. I watch them for the ships and characters and nifty bits even as I roll my eyes at the obvious solutions - with my science GCSEs and years of watching CSI, I knew before Cam, that the problem with figuring out whose blood was whose were because of the sibling relationship. I think I even used the word allele correctly. See, I can concentrate on the science bits! More generally, with a limited number of guest characters, the case is usually pretty easy to solve while you're watching along (and Bones's whole relationship with the cute, murderous brother continually screamed 'INAPPROPRIATE'). So, I'm really bored of the format, but hooked by the characters. Expect me to say the same thing tomorrow about Numb3rs - although I'm more hooked by the squints.

Oooh, Bones/Numb3rs crossovers. Bones/all sorts of things crossovers… Yes.

I also watched Supernatural this week. I didn't the week before - partly because it feels like half of fandom is in love with the show and I'm…not, partly because I wanted to finish a book. So, I didn't know why the brothers W. were chez les Harvelles nor how Sam was injured, but felt up to speed otherwise. I like Jo (I didn't realise it was Alona 'Meg' Tal until it was pointed out to me by itayavtalyon. She really reminds me of Linda Cardinelli, actually) although in the grand scheme of things, watching Dean and Jo is Dean/Faith lite. Though they are cute. Apart from her not sleeping on the bed and making him sleep on the couch.

Also, I wonder if the actress playing Ellen really is that gravelly or if she puts it on for Supernatural, because it's a contract stipulation for actors to use gravelly voices. Actually, I like that Kathleen Turner, Ally Walker type of gravelly voice.

Oh, and regarding the news on The X-Factor, so Kate Thornton is going (sniff, although I prefer Ben Shepherd's snarkiness, I liked her head girly side. And then I think of the gratuitous displays of her breastbone and I'm no longer sniffing. If ITV can get her, I'm sure they'll try for Ms Deeley. And Louis going too- to be replaced by two judges. I won't miss Louis and his brand of idiocy (and he doesn't have Paula Abdul's excuses). I wonder who they'll replace him with? You know that Foxy is (futilely) waiting for the phone call. Oh, hand on, two more mentors as much as judges they'll be, with the 'manager' designation. Hmm. Wouldn't fancy anyone's chances of breaking the Sharon-Simon deadlock. Er. Dynamic.

The other change, apparently, is lowering the age of contestants, which I think is madness, because the process is a lot (too much) to put on teenagers.

uk, bones, tv, the x-factor, supernatural
