First, on the tennis. So, I was wrong about the ladies' champion, but right about Federer (dead-on about the latter, actually, because after I saw how Nadal played in his semi-final, I thought he'd get a set off Federer. I'm already savouring the same line-up next year.) I was pleased for Mauresmo, as it turned out, possibly the pre-match talking up shifted my feelings. It was an interesting match to watch, anyway - they both were. And now Wimbledon is over and there is no tennis on my TV. No John MacEnroe being sharper and funnier than everyone, Andrew Castle will go back to the dumbing down that is GMTV. Funny Michael Stich will return to Germany and I will go back to ignoring the sports section of newspapers.
Meanwhile, I'm catching up with
metafandom. So, I saw the quote about an SPN interview
'I do understand why some would be quite upset by Jensen's reported comment: 'TV is a waste of time'.' And reading only that quote, I went 'oh dear, that was hardly tactful', and 'MUST READ THIS'. I skimmed the
linked interview and then the commentary that was linked to by metafandom (still with me?) But not the comments, because I am lazy. So now I think I know the context of the quote: first, the interview, as posted in the link, is a fannish translation of an interview that was already translated from English to Norwegian. In addition, the quote comes hot on the heels of a rant about reality TV. In the interests of full disclosure, I am being as snotty about this summer's Big Brother as you can be when you watched Celebrity X-Factor.
And to 'directly' quote:
You don't watch TV?
- Rarely. I say it's a waste of time. Seeing as I work in the business I have to watch an episode every now and then, but when I watch TV, I usually end up watching the Discovery Channel.
- I agree with Jensen. TV takes up too much of [people's] time. Reality TV is a bunch of crap, and I don't understand why people would want to read about who gained weight and who's dating who in the tabloids.
He's talking about himself in the main, and not wanting to take his work home with him is understandable. And in case this sounds too much like a fangirl's apologia, he is still saying that it is a waste of time (watch JP try to soften the blow, while broadening it to being a general waste of time, which, you could argue Ackles doesn't do, leaving the idea that his waste of time for me means a waste of time for everyone be inferred. If you want to infer it). This is such a digression. All I meant to say was that it was all less tactless than I thought it was when I saw the quote in metafandom, but still, it's pretty tactless to talk down your line of work in a public arena where the people who enjoy that work are likely to read it. Silly billy.
What amuses me is that with this attitude, Ackles had to play Alec (see icon), who waxed ecstatic about TV: I need my boob tube. You know? The hot medium. The vast wasteland.
And finally, for me, the best part of the interview, (which I skimmed)
Jensen [...] shakes his head.
Jared taps him on the shoulder.
- Relax. The people you're talking about probably watch Supernatural.
- Yeah, and that's good, but that's not really the world's most intellectual show either. [Emphasis mine.]
BWA!
That is all.
