Posting this before reading to see others' thoughts about Eurovision. My weekend was pretty good, I didn't get to watch the X-men films, which was as much my poor time-management as anything. I did some reading (may talk about that later) and writing (yay! Not loads, but some.)
I also watched The OC 'The Road Warrior' (
3-16 )
I can remember three very particular entries they've had in the past years, two from Germany (one where not even Germans could understand the text, because it was some sort of baby talk, no kidding; the other where the singer was a quite original character and climbed some part of the stage, I was expecting him to go stage diving as he usually does, but he left that part out - thankfully) and one from Austria, where a local comedian sang/spoke a really, really weird song. I guess Eurovision Song Contest always attracts some, uh, "birds of paradise".
That Finland won was surprising, however. But perhaps it was exactly because the group was so peculiar and the genre didn't really fit into the "happy-go-lucky-lalala" world. I guess this contest made it clear that it definitely is a "song contest" and not a "concours de la chanson" anymore. :)
I miss hearing the countrie's different languages, too. Ah, those were the days. We mostly had entries in French or Italian (only once in Raeto Rumantsch, far as I remember), but Switzerland hasn't had a decent entry since... well a long time. :) And the votes. I find it very interesting to see who gives points to whom for which political reasons. With certain countries, very predictable. Others: always a surprise. :) Sorry, I'm rambling. :)
It was a pleasure to read your thoughts, as always. Thanks a lot for sharing!

Thing is, if they're looking to make it big, English is the language of pop. Not that I think most of the contestants will do so. The UK's entries usually seem...sel-conscious somehow - and they can be pretty dire. but we're so aware of the hoop-la surrounding the competition.

Well, it's no surprise that the UK's been doing so badly the last few years. But yeah, an atlas and a history book and a strong does of cynicism are probably what's needed to get through the votes. And then there's the votes becuase people must have genuinely liked a certain song, which I don't get, at all.
