http://layton.wikia.com/wiki/Professor_Layton Affiliation: A trainer, though the professor would probably not really be into it as much.
Personality: Professor Hershel Layton is what many people and himself consider, a true gentleman. He often tries to help another, despite his own busy timetable, and places others’ concerns much higher than his own, especially if it’s a lady’s. Hence doing so, he would frequently stop and listen to one’s issues and would accept their requests out of sheer politeness if it weren’t too vulgar, even if it was a complete stranger asking. The professor never judges a person straight off the bat due to a rumor or a misunderstanding and would always give people second chances. It’s actually quite hard to hold a grudge against someone like this. However, when one does, the professor sometime does not realize it unless he had obviously done something wrong. If he had made someone jealous and it was not because he was showing off (which is very unlikely) but because one overheard or saw him, he would not know why a grudge was taken upon him, the exact same reason why he has no clue why Don Paolo hates him so. He can quite oblivious.
Like how most stereotypes of an English gentleman in the 1920s, Hershel Layton does have quite a taste of tea, even occasionally brewing his own cups with different ingredients to create new recipes. Of course, being the gentleman he is, he would often offer some tea to visitors and those who are sick, but of course, always the one he himself has tried before and not his experiments. Due to him knowing and tasting a wide variety of different tea, he would often know easily which one was best for different moods, sicknesses, or tastes. For the professor himself, he prefers tea that is more sour and bitter, compared to the sweetness that many others prefer.
Not only is Layton very kind and polite, he is also brave and can keep himself calm in the most panicked situations. If he senses one in danger, a person known to him or not, he would more than often run and help them out. He would leap into large amounts of danger to save that person, fearing nothing, but never in a reckless way that would harm both his and the other person's chance of survival. Thus why he often doesn’t let his emotions get the best out of him. It also helps for the professor that he knows some skill for fencing, thus allowing him to enter these situations with the other person feeling just a bit more reassured that he wouldn’t get as hurt as bad in fights, not like there would be any while in this strange world. But there were, he will never fight back unless he was forced to or in self defense.
But what stands out the most about this professor, and possibly his most recognizable feature, is his large brown top hat with a bright red brim. He never takes off this hat, even in his car (nicknamed the “Laytonmobile”, which was personally customized so he could wear his hat inside) and indoors. Very rarely does Layton take off his hat, normally only when he bathes and goes to sleep. He does have a very good reason as to why he doesn't take it off, but that's only for him and him alone to know. His only answer is that “a true gentleman never takes his hat off”, but there seems to be more to it than that. However, it seems like the professor doesn't want to go further in detail with it. One may try to get the truth out of it, but it'll quite hard. It seems like that hat has a very special meaning to him.
The other memorable characteristic of the professor is his great love for puzzles. Layton knows what seems to be hundreds of different puzzles: matchsticks, logic, math, wordplay, you name it. He's always up for a good puzzle and always giving others puzzles, just to kill time, boredom, or to try and lift the mood. Though critical thinking and his high intelligence, he is often to solve these puzzles, but be prepared if you meet up with this archaeologist professor, he would most likely give you a puzzle, if you like them or not.
The professor is also a man of many talents such as playing the piano and creating mechanics such as a helicopter from just simple materials such as a bucket and chainsaw. It's never a surprise to see him doing something new and skillfully. He has done quite a lot of different things in his life and what would one expect from the great Professor Hershel Layton?
Strengths:
» Being a gentleman: What else is the professor better than anyone at? Being a gentleman, that’s for sure. He's extremely kind, almost to becoming a push over. He will always respect someone and get on their good side. Need some help, the professor will be there! It'll be no good if everyone was enemies, will it?
» Staying calm: Layton is all about “think before you act”. He would more than often would be the calmest during a panic attack or when faced with his fears. Of course, this also comes in handy when people have those loud arguments, leaving the professor to be the peacemaker in them. Of course, there are times when even he would be a bit panicked, but he does still try to think things through, even if his thoughts are rushing through a hundred miles per second.
» Critical thinking: “Critical thinking is the key to success” is a phrase that the professor says very often and is very true. Through critical thinking, one could solve puzzles easily and think of a million uses with just one item. This would definitely come in handy while he stays most of his time outdoors, making use of any items. He may be no Survivor Man or outdoors man, but he could possibly think of some good uses for things such as branches.
» Puzzles: The professor is very well known back in London for his great puzzle solving skills. He has even solved quite a few extremely hard ones that had landed him on the front cover of the newspapers, hence why he is sometimes called in by the police to solve a mystery. However, it is not like he could solve them right off the bat- oh heavens, no -as he does take his time solving it like a normal person and not a genius, but he does often solve them a lot sooner than most people, all through critical thinking. As well as he can solve them, he loves them just as well. The professor can never resist a good puzzle and will often give others one for fun. This is the man one would want to take with them to a riddle contest, but of course, if he ever does get the answer wrong, he can get quite embarrassed, pulling his hat over his eyes.
» Quick on his feet: As one who practices fencing, Layton is quite quick and agile for a man in their late 30s. Combined with his quick thinking and his good health, it's quite hard to trap him in a corner...unless you hold someone or something hostage, but even then, the professor would probably think of a way to take back the hostage and knock you out. Thank goodness that the professor disapproves of theft or he would one great one.
» Mechanics: Professor Layton had shown great knowledge of how machines work and what is needed to function them. Because of this, he could possibly make any kind of transportation he might need from just everyday objects. He had once made a make-shift glider in just minutes from materials such as curtains and part of a large globe. A few other things he had made was a make-shift gun that shoots coins and a helicopter. However, despite making these machines work quite well, they don't last very long or work very efficiently. The glider had no safe way of landing and the helicopter had those usual "look how high we ar-OH MY GOD WE'RE FALLIN- Oh wait, we're good now-AHHHHAL;SKDF". Well, at least they served their purpose before they were destroyed.
Weaknesses:
» Sometimes clueless: The professor isn't clueless as he doesn't know what is happening all around him, but clueless as in why one might hold him in a grudge when he didn't do anything cruel or obviously wrong. With people like Don Paolo, who never told him the reason for hating him, never met with Layton before, or anything Layton had done to provoke the other, the professor would probably have no idea why the other hates his guts so much. If one wanted to be the professor enemy, it would probably be a good idea to tell him why or else the man would be thinking the other would be just a very strange individual.
» His hat: Indeed this is a strange weakness, but it's a weakness nevertheless. As most people that might know him, the professor never takes off his hat, even customizing his car's roof to allow him to wear it while driving. So it's very obvious that either the hat is very precious to him or that he just feels uncomfortable wearing it. It's all just speculations on why he has wears that hat, but one truth in all those theories is that he dislikes ever taking it off, either by his own will or by someone else's. If another person - or thing - tries to take his hat off without permission, the professor will most likely say something about that to prevent it so. If one does takes his hat, he will most likely try to negotiate and let his patience wear thin. Now, if one threatens to harm the hat while holding it hostage, the professor just might lose his patience all together, but he wouldn't scream and shout or punch the other, just perhaps forget the gentleman's rule of “respect one another and treat them with kindness”.
» Being a gentleman: Just as much as it is a strength, it's just as much as a weakness. Because Layton is always trying to be respectful and kind, it's quite hard to let his own needs before others. Of course there are times when he declines the other person's request due to certain reasons, but he can give in easily. Such as when he was called in to solve a mystery surrounding a village, he had wanted to ask a few questions about this mystery, but instead gave in to find a lost kitten by the one who called him in. Although it was no bother for him, it can bother others and in the end, may even slow down his journey to the next town.
» Staying organized: Though it would seem like the professor would be quite the organized person, he is actually not. He normally has his desk a bit of a mess and have his schedules all over the place. It is quite surprising for someone to hear about that, seeing how well mannered he is. Guess it's just what many people just assume. That's why his assistant, Luke, handle his mail and schedules. The boy is quite helpful and the professor is quite grateful for that.
Samples
(Please note that both samples must take place in Route_29’s setting.)
First Person Sample:
[The sound of tinkering can be heard, most likely from a Pokegear being examined at different angles and just pushing anything that eye catching. The owner of the device doesn’t quite seem to notice that is voice recorder is on due to the fact that there is nothing but silence and those usual sounds of the Pokegear being fiddled around for a few minutes. That is until the professor notices it.]
Oh, is this turned on? I must have switched it on while inspecting it.
[However, he isn’t quite sure if this is just a personal recording for himself or that it is being sent out to anyone listening. He thinks it’s the latter…thinks…Hopefully it is or he would be quite embarrassed. He clears his voice.]
To any that are listening out there, my name is Professor Hershel Layton and it seems like I'm quite lost. I have seemed to have wandered into some woods from a town called “New Bark Town”. I believe I’m in “route 29”? Unless I have traveled off course…I really hope that isn’t the case.
One of the kind gentlemen in a lab coat back in town has explained some a few things about this area and pointed out the path to the next town, but I'm still puzzled as to where I am exactly, such as this country. And apparently my "mother" has given me some supplies for the trip...I am so terribly confused...
Ah, but enough about that. Would anyone perhaps know where London would be? I'm afraid I can't find it on my map. Has anyone also seen a small boy in blue named Luke, he claims to be Professor Layton's apprentice, or a girl with a pink dress and answers to Flora? I haven't seen them since I have arrived here a few days ago. I'm awfully quite worried about them.
I apologize if I have seemed to have rambled on. I’m just…very disoriented…
Thank you.
[Now, does he turn this off or does he wait for a reply? More sounds of tinkering could be heard along with some quiet questions to his Vulpix, asking for her thoughts. Oh God, how do you work this?]
Third Person Sample:
It wasn't like the professor hated the outdoors, actually quite far from it. He loved Nature; he was an archaeologist and teacher of it at Gressenheller University after all. It would be quite strange of him if he didn't want to get his hands dirty at times, but this was getting a bit too much out of hand, even for him. He often didn't mind camping outside for a few days, possibly around three or four, but he was almost out here in the dense of the forest for a week with no tent or any survival tools. It didn't quite help that the weather out here was constantly changing as well, ruining any plans of starting a fire, sleeping under the stars, or making sure his hat didn’t fly away. Oh, and did he mention that he was also utterly lost? It was quite frustrating to say the least that his situation wasn’t looking very good.
Professor Hershel Layton was somewhere on route 29, but where exactly on it, he was quite clueless. He had a few supplies he had gotten from “his mother” (he…really didn’t want to speak about it…) that included a paper map, but it didn’t quite help on pinpointing where on that line marked “route 29” he was. He was also given this strange gadget, which he presumed it was used for communication with others, but he wasn’t quite sure on how to use it. He would probably have to fiddle around with it the next morning.
Using his walking stick that he picked up earlier, he used its point to push aside the burning wood in his small makeshift fireplace, allowing the flames to dance out further towards him. Nighttime had quickly fallen already and perhaps too quickly for his tastes. He didn’t quite mind the darkness that came after the day when he was back home in London, but when he was in this strange world, being lost in the dark was a little unnerving, even for him.
Not to mention that he was also deadly worried about Luke, his apprentice, and Flora, his adopted daughter. He hasn't heard anything from the two, or seeing any traces of them. They were probably not in this world, which would possibly be a good thing since it was so dangerous out here, but that just made him worry all the more. He wasn't sure on how the laws of time worked here compared to back home, but either way, he was concerned on whenever or not the two could do well without him. It wasn't as he didn't trust in their abilities, but to not even having a clue if they knew he was here or that he was listed as missing, it just worried him sick.
With a silent discouraged sigh, the professor placed his stick on the cold dirt floor, just beside his sleeping bag. Well, on the bright side, at least he wasn’t completely alone. He did have that fox-like creature with him, which he had named it “Claire”. The creature was quite loving towards him surprisingly and seemed to enjoy the professor’s company as much as he did hers. She also seemed to enjoy his puzzles actually, but just those visual ones. It was wonderful that he had a companion that could share an interest with him, animal or not. It made his mood rise up a little, even in a forest. Speaking about forests…
“Ah, this reminds me of a puzzle,” he exclaimed, beaming up like a child. “Would you like a go at it, Claire?”
Claire nodded excitingly beside him.
The professor picked up his stick once again and began to draw in the dirt.
“The forest below contains four different types of trees and...”
I tried my best to keep this spoiler free, but if you're curious as to some more past about him, give me a message. Things such as why his hat is so important is filled with spoilers and such as Claire, the person he named his Vulpix after. :>
