Picarats 006 [VIDEO/ ACTION IN ROUTE 30]- fastfoward to night

Oct 08, 2010 15:45

[So, it's finally night time all around Johto. The Hoothoots are now awake and flying around, and the Sentrets were starting to tuck themselves in. However, it wasn't that late out though, so it was not unusual that a new video entry appeared over the network.

The feed started up and it shook around for a minute, just before it focused on a man ( Read more... )

Of course I will; I do have a career at home.

[Odd for a teenager to have a career, but she's smiling]

I'm also curious about the puzzles.

[Oh! Colour the Professor interested. A teenager with a career? That's pretty neat.]

You have a career, ma'am? May I ask what it is, for curiosity's sake?

Ah, and wonderful! Is there any kind of puzzles you would prefer, so shall I just dish any one for you?

[Oh she's so pleased that somebody finally doesn't think she's a boy at first--she was starting to worry that she'd need to change more :/]

I am a detective like my parents before me. Naoto Shirogane, pleased to make your acquaintance.

I quite enjoy all kinds of puzzles, so whichever you pick will be excellent.

[Haha, well, this isn't the first time the Professor has spoken to Naoto. It was about two months ago since they spoken, so yeah...memory is a little fuzzy about the detective, but he remembers alright.]Ah, pleased to speak to you again, Miss Shirogane. You possibly not remember me without my top hat. It has been a while. I am Professor Hershel Layton. I believe it has been about...two months ( ... )

[She blinks, and then she blushes] Oh, you're right. Forgive me; I'm not so skilled at remembering voices as I am faces.

[She thinks for a moment] The back seems the most likely answer.

It is alright. It has been quite a while.

[He places on a smile to reassure the detective, and it only grew larger once Naoto solved the puzzle.]

You are quite correct! Although the man could throw his dart and even land it straight in the center ten times over, he could never hit the back.

[And these complete 10 picarats for you, young ma'am! The Professor doesn't have his notepad with him at the moment, so he'll just have to remember writing the amount next to Naoto's name.]

Very well done, Miss Shirogane. You finished that one quite quickly.

[Naoto's smile is quite bright and excited.]

What a difference a word can make. These types of puzzles are always delightful.

Of course, in addition to the back, one could argue that the bottom edge is also impossible to hit when one obeys the usual rules of darts--which I would guess the man and the villagers assumed.

[Naoto...don't complicate the puzzle. It's solved!]

[That just grabs a chuckle from the Professor.]

Yes, that will be another place impossible to hit and could possibly be one of the answers. Very observant.

Would you like to give another one a go, ma'am?

Of course! I'm having a wonderful time. I admit, I haven't had much chance to solve puzzles lately.

The only case is that of our arrival and I fear I'm making little progress.

Hm, it is rather hard to gather any clues or hints about this case. I am afraid I am not gathering much information either.

But in other words, here is another puzzle for you, Miss Shirogane:

"Two convicts are locked together inside a cell. There is an unbarred widow in the cell, but high up. Even if they stood on the beds or on top of another, they could not reach it to escape. Finally, they decided to dig a tunnel out, but gave up after digging for an hour. Suddenly, one of the convicts had figured out how to escape. What is his plan?"

[25 picarats for this one on your first try! Go go, Naoto!]

Simple! Though I cannot condone escaping from prison, an hour of studious digging should have produced enough dirt to provide the extra height they needed.

[Naoto is very good at puzzles and grinning like a kid in a candy shop. She's sure she has this one right]

Very well done. You are correct once again! Just have you said, after an hour digging, they should have enough dirt to pile it up and stand on top of it and escape. Critical thinking is the key to success!

[Another 25 picarats for you! Congratulations! The Professor is pretty impressed.]

You are very good at these puzzles. You must be a very impressive detective back in your home.

I have solved many cases, both as an assistant and on my own but I admit, there is still much for me to learn.

I have, as of yet, an incomplete grasp of the intricacies of forensic science, advanced mathematics, and several other necessary sciences.

Ah, that is rather a lot more to learn, though your state at the moment without them is still rather impressive.

I would love to hear one of your solved cases, if you don't mind, Miss Shirogane.

[Hmmm.]

Well, you must forgive me if I leave out some of the details. Confidentiality, you understand.

My most recent case was a serial murder. It was most complicated; there was unfortunately even a copycat killer. We did eventually sort through the evidence and were able to pinpoint the true culprit behind it all.

Unfortunately the killer was a member of the police force, and in the ideal position to hide and tamper with evidence, but his own arrogance caught him in the end. Through several events, including the leaving of threatening letters, he slipped up enough to be caught.

No, I completely understand.

[The Professor listens carefully and shakes his head at some parts.]

A member of the police force? How terrible. Those in the law enforcement shouldn't be doing such crimes. Though I am very glad that you managed to capture this man before anything got worse.
