I had not noticed
how much time had passed.
I have been going through my predecessor’s papers; although we would never have agreed on the relative validity of Barnes’ and Cahill’s principles, and although I believe her theories on Alternative Universes (or AUs as she tended to refer to them) were frankly laughable, she was a great loss to the wizarding world. I haven’t enough firsthand experience of Mr Black to decide whether this sacrifice was worthwhile, but somehow I doubt it.
Her most recent work is simultaneously her most far-fetched and poorly researched, and most fascinating. Her notes are fragmentary- I feel sure there is a notebook missing, somewhere- frequently lack justification and rely on ridiculous jumps of logic that barely stand up under scrutiny. She based much of her work on wild theories and long-dismissed speculations, and entirely too many of her sources ended up in St Mungo’s.
And yet.
And yet it worked. Sirius Black is alive and making a nuisance of himself back from beyond the Veil. I may well have to speak with the man, see what his perspective can add to the research I have. He may well have seen something that could allow me to divine where Vector went wrong, and if not... well, he has a unique insight into what lies beyond the Veil, something that is potentially fascinating and valuable and possibly lucrative.
There is evidence again and again in Vector’s notes that she was far too close to the subject matter- they indicate a personal infatuation, almost an obsession with the Veil. There was none of the professional detachment she evidences in her earlier work; I believe this strong feeling may well have contributed to her death. If I could continue her research, use her notes to aid my research while keeping my distance from the subject matter... the possibilities are endless.
If only it weren’t for all the gaps in her notes, damn it.
