oo1: Professor Layton and the Calamitous City

Claire, wait! [The video feed opens to the view of green sneakers (Layton having accidentally kicked the device laying on the ground and causing it to start), and the sound of a clipped, British accent. However, to those that know Layton, those two words, breaking in tone, sound very unlike the composed professor. The shoes shuffle ( Read more... )

[The screen on the communicator turns on, showing the image of a small boy sitting in bed with a few bandages wrapped around him.]

Luke will be very happy to see you, I know.

Luke is here? [Layton isn't sure whether to be relieved or worried. On the one hand, he is happy to have a familiar face but Dissimulo doesn't excatly seem safe.]

Thank you for telling me. I'll try to get in contact with him as soon as possible, and find out where we are exactly. [Layton tugs on his hat, some concern passing across his face.] I hope I haven't worried him too much in the time we were separated.

For some time. I know he's been worried about you.

Do you know which city you're in?

Oh, I see. For some time, though? We've only been separated for an hour or two.

[Layton pauses in thought, before answering.] Unfortunately, I don't. Does this device record myself as well? If it does... [Layton turns the feed from himself to his surroundings. There is a church nearby, with shop buildings a distance away.] that is what it looks like around here. If it helps, I was able to find out the street name I am on as well: King Street.

I arrived here some five months ago, and he was already here then.

Oh? That's convenient. You're in Dissimulo.

[A frown begins to form on Layton's face.] Five months? That can't be right. I am quite sure Luke was in the alley with me before I was somehow transported here. ...Hm, what a puzzle this is.

[However, Layton brightens a little bit at knowing the name of the town's he is in.] Dissimulo, hm? I haven't heard of a town like that before, but at least it is something to go on. Do you mind if I ask if you know where Luke could be, too?

Oh, excuse me, I should probably also ask for your name since you've been very helpful to me so far. These strange circumstances may be harrowing, but a true English gentleman should never forget his manners.

Unfortunately some confusion with times seems to be common here. The scientists seem to have some capability to either manipulate memories or time.

I'm not sure where he is right now, but I believe he is in Discedo. He did stay in one of the houses here. But I expect that he will contact you as soon as he sees your message.

Conan Edogawa. I'm an elementary school detective.

[Layton takes a moment to mull over this new information.] I see. Then, is this whole thing an experiment? I can't imagine what use these scientists would have for bringing us here.

All right. It seems this device is much more handy than I first thought. It makes communicating easy, at least.

Pleased to meet you, Mr. Edogawa. A detective, you say? Well, I'm glad to meet someone else who probably wants to get down to the bottom of these mysteries as much as I do.

They claim that they wish us to rebuild these cities, but many of their actions don't seem to match up with that goal.

It has been very useful for that. People here are separated between three cities. There is this town of Dissimulo, a larger city called Discedo and another city called Spero. Discedo is only a short trip by subway away, but Spero is a longer trip.

Glad to meet you as well, Professor. This is a very troublesome case, after all.

Yes, everything doesn't seem to be in good repair. Perhaps an ulterior motive guides them, instead of what they have said so far?

Ah, I was wondering if you would know the location of the subway, Mr. Edogawa? It seems I'll be heading to Discedo to meet up with everyone and see where to go from there.

It might be my most mystifying to date. But, every puzzle has a solution and I'm sure this is no different.

That seems likely. But we don't know what that motive is yet.

...You said you were on King Street? I could come over and show you the way. I'm only a few blocks away from there. [Provided he could sneak out of here without Ran catching him.]

It's just another mystery, even if it is more complicated than any pule I have seen before.

And it seems people have been here for years without knowing what their true motive is. These scientists are proving to be quite the formidable mystery.

That's correct. If you could do that, Mr. Edogawa, I would be very grateful. It would save a lot of searching on my end.

[Layton nods.] Indeed. I wonder what sort of thrilling solution could be in store for us? It must be something grand, considering the scope of this particular puzzle.

At least three years. That is the furthest back we've been able to track any incidents. [He doesn't mention the theory about multiple factions among the scientists he'd been working on with Hattori. First he would wait and see what kind of detective this professor was.]

It is no problem at all. It will give me something to do today. I should be there in about ten minutes.

I see. How intriguing. [Layton is hoping to do some investigative work himself once he gets settled.]

Thank you, Mr. Edogawa. I'll be right by the church, then.

[And about ten minutes later a small boy leaning on a makeshift crutch will approach the church.]

[Layton himself is rather obvious in his tall tophat, sitting among some rubble by the church. Hearing approaching footsteps, he raises his head.]

Mr. Edogawa? [And then he sees the crutches.] Oh, I'm terribly sorry for making you come out all this way when you're injured.
