I was recently thinking of photographing a bunch of local manhole covers, but now they just seem sad and depressing.

Those are amazing. You could always try searching for Toynbee tiles. Or just hijack the technique for your own crazy street tile messages.

I remember seeing those all around DC back in the day, but not really in the years before i moved. I wonder if the city finally ripped them out?

that says so much about Japaneese culture! Its kinda strange - they do such a great job of remaining a kid in some instances - but they also take their jobs so seriously that suicide is a real option for work failures.
