Chapter 1: Night of the Funeral
Part 1: Flint
Now the game begins in earnest, and with a bang! There is a forest fire, and it is all kinds of alarming.
THOMAS
It's a fire! A fire, a fire! The Sunshine Forest is on fire in a huge, firey, flamey fire!!
This is Flint. In Mother 3, not every chapter has the same main character. In Chapter 1, we play the role of Flint, Lucas's father.
Flint is a good amount stronger than Lucas, starting at level 7. He also has a special skill set, which I'll go into more detail about once we get into a battle.
THOMAS
It's the forest! The forest, the forest! The forest is on fire!!!
*KNOCK KNOCK*
Geez! Who would lock their door in a village as peaceful as ours?! Flint!
THOMAS
The doorknob...
Why'd you hafta come off at a time like this?!
THOMAS
This is no time to be dozing off! There's a huge fire ini the Sunshine Forest! Bad times like this call for reckless nice guys like you! Please come, Flint!!! Please!

THOMAS
I'll follow behind you.
What? What's so wrong with that? I happen to like following behind people!
Now Thomas is in my party... kind of. He doesn't have any stats, and can't be attacked by enemies, but he'll sometimes do almost-but-not-quite useless things during battles.
Why, yes, Mr. Frog! Yes, I will.
This is Tazmily Village. We'll be spending a LOT of time here, but for now, we're in a bit of a rush. No time to talk to people at random.

MAPSON

You're worried about Lighter's shack deep inside the Sunshine Forest, yes? I've marked that area on the map for you. Please hurry and see if he needs help.
Oh, whoops. Silly me. Forgot tot ell you how to check the map, didn't I?
To check the map, you need to - how do I put this? Fill your right index finger with a wish. Or strength. To put it more bluntly, I guess do something R Button-ish?
Here's the map, which normally scrolls vertically, but I have put together into one supertall image using incredible MSPaint skills.
Looking at the map, we've got to get to the circled area - in other words, generally north-northwest-ish.
A couple areas later...

Any responsible person heading into the forest would first stop by the sanctuary to say a little something to the forest gods! At least that's my opinion, anyway!

Pray. Pray that the forest and the people and the animals and I can all have happiness.

Having forgotten that this last exchange ever happened, it's time to head into the Sunshine Forest.
Here it comes! Our first random encounter!
Our first opponent as Flint is a bat. Named Mr. Batty. His music sounds kind of like the Batman theme.
This is Flint's skill set. He has four abilities:
Power Smash: Bash with brute force. Misses often.
Swing: Swing wildly to damage all enemies.
Strengthen Up: Focus strength to raise Offense.
Toughen Up: Stiffen your body to raise Defense.
For now, we won't use any of these at all. Instead, we'll just hit the bat until it falls over.
See Thomas being a useful, productive member of the party!
Obviously, I won't be covering every battle in this level of detail, but I thought this deserved a bit of special attention, being Flint's first fight.
See that sign on the left? That is our very favorite sign.
Hot springs are our healing points. Just wade around in the water for a few seconds, and we're all restored to full HP.
