Final Chapter: The Chaos Gate
Floor 49!
It's very cold.
What a strange floor!
I can't move. The ground is frictionless. Teleportation is blocked.
How will I move?
Kicking off the wall!
I can only get one space in that way.
PHYSIIICS
Throwing or firing anything causes me to careen in the opposite direction!
My archery skills haven't really developed to the point that they're at all useful, so I can freely shoot my way towards the center.
These winged arrows really do the trick! I think the distance moved by a throw is related to the maximum range of the attack.
I've made it. Time to rest one last time.
So it begins.
The Metaplane
The final battleground of the war between chaos and order
Threat Level: 6/5
Top left: Lever.
Bottom left: Lever.
Center left: ThE cHaOs GaTe.
Right half cleared with no difficulty! Now for the meat of the battle.
First, I am beset by hordes of greater chaos servants!
Corruption rate here is up to 1.5 corruption points per turn. I should be fine - less than half my soul belongs to Chaos.
Above and below: Chaos mutants!
Ahead: Writhing masses of primal chaos!
Invisibility cloak is go! I almost forgot I had it.
I'm fairly sure that writhing masses of primal chaos, at least, don't see invisible.
This part is a very back-and-forth fight - I get up to the three-way split, then fall back when the three hordes converge, and fight in the hallway.
COMPLEX BOUNCE PATTERNS
Level 45 reached!
I'm going with Very Hardy. Every hit point counts.
More brutal annihilation!
The chaos mutants are down!
Next up is the writhing masses of primal chaos.
All right! Done.
With the easy part.
While I recover my power points up here, my evolution continues to reverse (thanks, Corruption), increasing my physical stats and decreasing my mental stats. Frankly, I think my mental stats are sufficiently high to handle the endgame.
So! Let's talk GOALS.
My goal, in a large scale sense, is to stop the incursion of chaos into the world. To do this, I have to pull both levers to close the Chaos Gate, then make sure that they never get pulled back - either by destroying them, or by destroying everything on the floor that can pull levers.
At some point I lost my Wands of Destruction, so I have to do this the hard way.
Next obstacle in my path! GHOST LORDS. And CHAOS WARRIORS.
I'm pretty sure ghost lords can't handle levers, but I must destroy them regardless.
Fire bolt is my weapon of choice here - I don't have any use for it later on, so I might as well empty it out now.
I'm actually swapping out my invisibility cloak just to encourage enemies to line up towards me.
I'm not entering that chamber until I have to. No questions.
And there goes my last fire bolt!
Another level up!
Oh, shit. They found me.
Balors CAN handle levers.
Maximizing distance using teleport to engage the first two of the balors!
Remain calm! Use ball spells when they close in melee! Teleport away if I get injured!
One down.
I'm up to 11 corruptions now. I don't have time to rest.
So, I'll let the Gods restore my power.
TWO DOWN.
Last talent. For real this time.
Going with Potent Aura.
Level 49! There's no way I'm not capping in this encounter.
&
Fistanarius, the Greater Balor
Very few of these legendary opponents of law may exist. If more did exist, the powers of law would have sensed them and acted to destroy them, as the greater balor is a threat to any manifestation of law. They, like their smaller relatives, appear as humanoids cloaked in fire and shadow, but this variety is titanic in stature, capable of dwarving the giant kings. Their true power is unknown, as many of their opponents are said to die of fear when realizing what they face, but they must be mighty in combat. Their nature makes them resistant to most magics, and so they are worthy opponents for beings of both physica and magical strengths.
Threat Level: 11/10
Special: Corruption, summoning, immune to fire, teleports
Corpse: N/A
All right, ladies.
Let's go to town.
The balors are teleporting all over the floor now. Hunting them down won't be easy.
ANOTHER ONE DOWN
I have attained the highest experience level.
I now know every spell but one.
Among my new spells is Heal - the only healing magic more potent than Cure Critical Wounds.
They can be killed!
SO EVEN THE GREAT CHAMPIONS OF CHAOS ARE CAPABLE OF FEAR
Balance walks this realm, agent of Chaos.
It says you are not welcome here.
Only four balors left!
Three.
Two.
One.
Zero.
This is good!
I kill the ghost lord just on principle.
I actually have the option of crossing through the gate. Suffice to say that this would be a Bad Idea. In my state, I would never survive the crossing.
Let's close this bitch!
...to disappear. It seems that you have succeeded in your quest!
Let's
go
home.
Making the return trip faster!
The staircase here is once again an up staircase! The metaplane is now forever sealed.
Freaking ROCKETING up this dungeon. Teleporting whenever possible.
Goodbye, unreal cavern.
Goodbye, earth temple.
Goodbye, air temple.
Goodbye, lair of the cat lord.
Goodbye, battle bunny arena.
Goodbye, Darkforge.
Goodbye, casino.
Goodbye, lair of the banshee.
Goodbye, water temple.
Goodbye, graveyard.
Goodbye, animated forest. Goodbye, dwarven halls.
*Grin*
"Me is relieved. May all the gods bless ye.
Now go home and enjoy ye rewards -- ye earned them."
Goodbye, dwarftown.
Goodbye, Big Room.
Goodbye, arena.
Goodbye, Caverns of Chaos.
However, this is hardly suitable condition for a victorious hero, now, is it?
Let's talk to Yrruir.
"Very well. Ye freed the imprisoned part of my life essence.
Now I am a complete being once more, and will use my full powers to stop the forces of Chaos.
Once I will be able to heal all corruption that has been inflicted upon you.
Shall I remove thy corruption? (y/n)"
[Y]
Yrruir, the greater white unicorn, touches you with her horn.
You feel cleansed.
Your cranium shrinks back to normal size. You calm down. The fluid dripping from your hands suddenly is gone. The unholy aura surrounding you suddenly disappears. You seem to integrate into the evolutionary scheme once more. The thorns in your hands suddenly retard and disappear. You suddenly gain a *lot* of weight. The horns in your forehead disappear. Your feet are reversed to their normal shape. Suddenly 10 of your 12 eyes disappear. The unnatural vigor brimming through your veins suddenly is gone. Your body becomes thicker and you assume your usual shape. Your reflexes slow down once more.
Corruption: ZERO.
No more obstacles lie in my path.
Goodbye, Drakalor Chain.
Time to check out the game summary!
I finished the game a solid month before the corruption rates would have increased.
I killed a fuckton of monsters.
I didn't even see that last artifact! Sometimes they just slip by.
The only important intrinsic I never got was death ray resistance. It's why Nuurag was such a grueling encounter.
Final equipment loadout! This was mostly set in stone by about halfway through the game. I never found a replacement for those bracers.
I had a couple bonus artifacts hanging around that I could have sacrificed for piety, but it wasn't necessary. They can go into my king treasury.
Beyond that, it's mostly a bunch of random shit I never used, and 190k gold.
THE END
Holy shit, guys, when I undertook this, I had no idea that it would be the time I finally beat the game! It wasn't a legit win since I save scummed, but still, my first ever.
Thank you for joining me! I'll start a new LP soon.
