Parking lot by the causeway, then Washington [evening]

Nov 10, 2006 16:19

Josh was waiting beside his clean--if not exactly stylin'--car with a rose in his hand and a nervous expression on his face.

Dating was not his forte.

At all.

[OOC: For Aly, please...]

Aly, who was actually nervous since one didn't precisely date in Tortall but wasn't showing it because she was Aly, came up to him very quietly wearing a blue dress. "Hi," she said when she was near.

Josh's jaw dropped.

"You look incredible," he finally stammered.

She smiled and gave a little curtsy. "Thank you. You look very handsome yourself."

Josh quickly regained his natural equilibrium. "Of course I do," he teased, moving to the passenger side of the car and opening the door. "After you," he said.

Aly hesitated a beat, not entirely certain of the car situation then got into it carefully. "So very gentlemanly," she teased back.

"You're not exactly used to cars, huh?" Josh asked as he drove across the causeway and towards the highway.

"They're not quite typical in my world. We're more on the horse and ship level," Aly replied with a small shrug. "I've not actually been in one before." She was splitting her attention between watching out the window and trying to figure out how the car was run.

"You'd have to pay me a lot of money to get me up on a horse," Josh said with a grin as they joined the seemingly endless line of cars making their way across the 14th Street Bridge.

From the window, they could see the Jefferson Memorial and the Washington Monument. "Welcome to Washington," Josh said with a smile.

"You've never been on a horse?" Aly replied, and there was a gleam in her eye that was probably quite evil.

"Oh, beautiful," she said under her breath, watching out the window. "All the lights on the monuments." She grinned at him. "Your city, hmm?"

"Yep," Josh said, eyes sparkling as he navigated through the streets. "They were going to rename in my honor, of course, but I told them it was unnecessary. I'll take you on a better tour later--our reservations are in a few minutes."

He pulled the car in front of Kinkead's and smiled at the valet.

Aly laughed. "Do you have people wanting to name cities after you too? It gets so tiresome after a while."

She got out as the valet opened the door and, completely unable to break a lifetime's habit, began categorising everyone she saw into their approximate threat level.

Josh reached for her hand as they walked into the restaurant and gave her a running commentary of everyone they passed. "Committee aide, lobbyist, complete tool, hates me, hates me a lot, Congressman --that's not his wife--, lobbyist, lobbyist, ambassador from Azerbaijan..."

A few moments later they were seated at a quiet table in the back of the restaurant.

"Hi," Josh said, smiling.

"Hi," she replied, smiling back and amused at his commentary. "This is lovely. So is everyone here either elated or horribly depressed over Tuesday still? Or have they moved on to figuring out how they're going to keep as much power as possible under the new government?"

"That third one, mostly," Josh said as he looked over the wine choices. His expertise on this was limited to "it's wine, you'll drink it," so he hoped rather desperately that the waiter would steer them in the correct direction.

"If you're eating at Kinkead's, you're trying to stay rich enough to keep eating at Kinkead's or powerful enough to get someone else to take you here," he continued with a grin.

Aly would have pointed out that she knew just as little about wine as he did so she wasn't going to complain, but he did, in fact, look like he mostly had a clue.

"Makes me powerful then," she said, teasingly.

"Very," Josh agreed with a wink. He looked back at the menu. "Do you have any deeply-felt beliefs for or against seafood?"
