CANON HISTORY; - The third son born to Dr. Cidolfus Demen Bunansa and his wife.
- At the age of sixteen, he became an Archadian Judge, thus joining the ranks of the prided Archadian military.
- While the details of his relationship with his father prior to Giruvegan are unknown, it is known that once his father returned, their relationship was strained.
- After Dr. Cid returned from Giruvegan, his sanity appeared to be deteriorating. He often mentioned putting "The reigns of history back into the hands of Man," and would be found in rooms, alone, talking nonsense with himself and invisible figures. Balthier was not able to comprehend his father's behavior--hell, he could barely stomach it--and eventually, combined with the increasing corruption in the Archadian government, he just left all together.
- To aid his escape, he stole an Archadian ship and set off. Along the way, he met Fran, and with her help, they began to customize the ship (later named the Strahl), to travel as they pleased, and to rise the ranks of successful sky pirates.
- Eventually, he and Fran meet up with Vaan, Basch, Penelo, and Ashe. Initially, he is pained (yet curious as to why) that he must deal with all the extra baggage--but eventually he decides that this is as good a time as any to confront his father in Archades and to discover exactly who he was talking to.
- After discovering the secret of the Occurians (the beings that controlled the tides of fate and who Dr. Cid and a rogue Venat intended to disrupt), Balthier and the rest of his companions slowly worked their way up to the top of the Archadian government, finally taking down Vayne--the mastermind of a corrupt, oppressive, Archadian Empire--on the airship, the Bahamut.
- The Bahamut malfunctions and begins to fall upon the heavily populated city of Rabanastre. Instead of making a getaway on the Strahl, Balthier shelters Fran from harm and attempts to right the ship and fix the engines. He tells Vaan to take care of his airship while he is gone, and assures Ashe that the "leading man" cannot die.
- One year later, Balthier and Fran take the Strahl and leave to resume life as it was before.
CANON ABILITIES; Aside from being quite familiar with the workings of a rifle and being a quite competent sharpshooter, in canon, Balthier has the ability to cast a few simple spells--though admittedly, he's not exactly a natural born mage.

AU HISTORY; - Born to a scientist and a lawyer, Balthier was raised in England along with his two older brothers. The oldest was destined to follow science, the middle child destined to law, the youngest--well, Balthier--was destined to not really think about destiny all the time.
- Initially, Balthier's relationship with his father (the scientist) were decent, if not favorable--but as his father became more and more absorbed in research, he became estranged from the family. He spent more time away from home, which put more work upon his mother and more stress upon the family itself.
- Not exactly fond of where his relationship with his father was going, Balthier decided that, above all else, he must not turn out like him. He strayed away from his family's pretentious rites and formalities and began to speak his mind more often.
- Eventually, he decided that he would rather pursue a more well-rounded, American education rather than an English one where studies were far too focused and, frankly, not to his liking. And of course, moving away would help to put more distance between him and his father.
PERSONALITY; Balthier is a man who's quick to the punch and never misses a beat--he's always on the ready, never caught off guard, and never caught without a trick up his sleeve (at least, that is what his peers have grown to believe). A frank and opinionated man when it comes to politics and society, everything from the way he acts, speaks, dresses, and walks makes Balthier the living, breathing example of the aristrocratic gentleman (except for, you know, the "being daft" part of the job description).

While his pretentious way with words and suspiciously natural knack for backhanded compliments may make him come off as rather unpleasant, Balthier isn't as much of an incorrigible asshole has he tries to make it seem. He's god a brain behind the lip, and a bite with the bark. He's got a never-faltering amount of common sense, and always plans ahead--he's the type that comes off placid, but is always, always thinking. But of course, he isn't some antisocial hermit--he actually quite enjoys the company of others, and in a good mood, can be very sociable. He is calm, witty, likeable--and, well, a bit arrogant, too. I guess it comes with living the good life for so long.

And though he tries to come off as some proud, independent loner, he does foster quite the soft spot for the underclassmen that he takes under his wing. In the end, it cannot be argued or denied that Balthier is a pretty accepting guy--an accepting guy that can be fiercely loyal to his loved ones. Once he sets his mind to things, he goes through until end--and once he forges a bond, he's not one to take it lightly. In short, Balthier is the type of man who doesn't care for loose ends or regrets--and exchange a few words with him, and you'll know it, too.

RP SAMPLES

JOURNAL POST; Quite a fat lot of transfers this year, aren't there? But I suppose there's nothing wrong with a little fresh blood, anyway.

Well, anyway. Welcome, welcome, to all those new little freshies and all these out-of-nowhere transfers. For those who don't know me, my name is Balthier. For those who do--well. Sorry for drilling it into your head a bit more.

I suppose that I could be offering my "scholastic expertise" to the rest of you, but it seems I was beaten to the punch by several other students. Hopefully you won't judge me too much if I choose not to shoulder the "model, welcoming student" baggage, yes? Wonderful.

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE;

Not exactly the cleanest of getaways, was this? the man thought--he thought as he sat down at the very bottom, at the lowest of low, rotting in the dungeons of the Nalbina fortress.

Of course, I wouldn't quite call it a getaway, seeing how we haven't outed ourselves quite yet.

Well, not exactly rotting, per se. There was still water. He still had some energy. He had only been there for, what, an hour? Barely any time had passed at all, and here he was. Complaining to himself in the middle of the Estersand. (Not that this was anything new, anyway.)

That bratty little street rat--Vaan, was it--lay unconscious in the middle of the room. But he was breathing, at least. It was a rather pressing (relief in itself) assurance that when he awoke, Balthier would have to lug him back over to Rabanastre once more. He wasn't exactly sure when he made the job change from free-for-all sky pirate to the resident nanny, but he couldn't exactly bring himself to care.

He leaned back in his seat and crossed his arms. The dungeon smelled of filth, of bangaa corpses and hume excrement (oh, yes. The people of the Nalbina dungeons were really the epitome of the life of party), but as he looked around, he couldn't help but notice. The people... in there. They were not... murderers. They were not "disrupters of order." They were... normal people. People who probably asked an Archadian soldier to pay before he started eating a farmer's produce, or people who did not bow fast enough when a Judge entered the room. Those were the kinds of people trapped in this place. Petty thieves, men who were one kids who scrounged about for food and money. They were the people trapped in the Nalbina dungeons.

To tell the truth, as Fran searched about for an exit and as Balthier kept watch over Vaan--he couldn't help but... feel a bit of remorse. Feel a little guilty that he was probably the most notorious criminal here--and yet he knew that in no time flat, he would be walking free.

Such a feeling was not suited to a man of aristocratic stature, was what the Archadians would have said.
