Nostalgia

I've been working really hard, and finally got it together enough to renew my reader's card at the Huntington. And to my embarrassment I was there about an hour when I ran into some colleagues from grad school. THEY were working. Yah, I saw that, and the resultant flap on the Jim Butcher forums. Far as I can tell, that doesn't mean Harry is going to wind up with Susan. What it does is complicate the hell out of things. More. Such as "who is 'they?' and why did they take her, and is she definitely referring to a daughter with Harry (though, Occam's razor, I think that's likely and even probable), and does Susan want to get back with Harry just because they have a daughter (maybe not, or she would have said something about it before)? If that's Harry's kid, he is definitely going to feel strongly about it, because of the whole orphan thing. And then there's what all the other women in Harry's life are going to think about this. Like I said. Complicated. Which, if I were writing a 20-book series, is where I would want to go.

Obviously, since there's going to be 20 (!) books (better start saving my pennies now!) there's a lot of room for all kinds of things to happen, including some serious character death. I'm ok with any of it, except for Mister. You don't just kill cats. Actually, the main problem I have with Cat Death or Pet Death, aside from the general sadness of it all, is that it's so often a cheap device. I can tell when the author is sticking it in just to make me cry, and that pisses me off.
