First of all, I know some of you live in areas that might be affected by Sandy. Most of my family will be too. Please stay safe, guys.
Next: guys, I have been trying to keep my lips zipped over here, but if I do not say this I would kick myself forever. In the last two weeks alone, we have seen more ignorant, stupid-ass comments about rape and the female body from GOP candidates than I could ever imagine. I am sick and tired of Mr. "legitimate rape" Akin, and Mr. "no such thing as the life of the mother" Walsh, and Mr. God intended rape pregnancy to happen Mourdock.
Jon Stewart's
gobsmacked about this. BTW, if you're not from the US, please go ahead and read this anyway. You'll be amazed, let's put it that way.
EDIT: if you do have your rapist's baby, did you know that in 31 states,
he has parental rights?
You think they're outliers? Well, they're not. There are
13 Senate candidates who have the same view. They are running in Missouri, Indiana, Virginia, North Dakota, Texas, Nebraska, Nevada, Michigan, Ohio, and Montana. What's more, Mitt Romney has only endorsed one Senate candidate, and that is Mourdock. Do you live in those states? Do you really want these people to be in charge? And they even want an amendment so that any employer can refuse to extend health care coverage for any condition that offends their moral or religious sensibilities at all.
In fact, between deciding that pregnancy happens up to two weeks before conception, and that "some girls rape so easy," and not knowing how ultrasounds work, I've decided that a lot of Republicans skipped health class. I would've written a whole thing about this, but this article in the Huffington Post says it better: it's
Remedial Women's Studies. Yes, it is the Huffington Post, and the author is a Democrat, but her facts are right. READ IT. RIGHT NOW. THE WHOLE THING, BECAUSE IT'S IMPORTANT. Let's not forget the Arizona law which lets employers review whether or not women are using birth control pills for birth control instead of for some other medical reason. How about in vitro fertilization being illegal? Yeah, that too.
There's even a website for
Days Without a GOP Rape Mention.
Tina Fey is sick of
guys mansplaining to her what rape is, and so am I.
At the risk of pissing off people who read my blog and don't want to read about politics, get up off your butt and vote these clowns back to the stone age where they belong. They are counting on you sitting on your duff and not bothering.
They think women vote their
pocketbook. Well, fine, I'd like the economy to improve too. But if we don't have our freedom, we don't have anything. If we don't own our bodies, if we can be grabbed and poked and prodded and forced to undergo medical procedures we don't want, we're not free.
And while we're on the subject of shit that pisses me off, have some voter suppression for dessert. It is bad enough that we have UN observers trying to keep an eye on this. Really.
"But Prof! I hate politics! I hate it hate it hate it! I just want it to go away and leave me alone!"
Well, tough titty. A lot of people on this f-list belong to one of two demographics or both: undecided female voters or young voters from 18-29. YOU ARE IMPORTANT. YOU CAN DECIDE WHAT KIND OF WORLD WE'RE GOING TO LIVE IN FOR DECADES TO COME. A lot of you come from early voting states, and some come from states where the hurricane might hit.
So I'll get down from the soapbox, and you can go vote, NOW, and then please stay safe, along with your family and friends and pets, and I hope you don't have any damage, really.
We will now return to our regularly scheduled discussion about Sims and ponies and pets n' stuff.
