Well, not really smarter than YOU. Smarter than EA?
I know a lot of people have already found mirror sites for the PC patches, but here is the "official" EA help site. Otherwise they are not so helpful.
Look here. Aspyr still has the Mac patch up. Grab it if you think you might need it,
here. Please note that you can't install the first four or five Sims 2 games on a Mac running OS 10.7 (Lion.) Here's a tech geek explanation as to why,
here, and here's a site with a list of
stuff that doesn't run on Lion. The weird thing is that it says The Sims 2 "works fine." Maybe it "works fine" if you just leave it on there, but you're screwed if you need to re-install? If you want to know what apps will still work, open System Profiler -->> Software. Anything with "Universal" or "Intel," you're fine. If it says "Power PC," you're screwed. You can try updating the app first. So far, the ONLY apps I have that won't work are Quicken 2007, the old version of Photoshop I've got, and a bunch of drivers.
I guess my advice to Mac users would be to save everything, delay the upgrade, and wait to see if there are work-arounds (there may be.)
Sorry, guys, this is what happens when I get stressed out: I turn into Hermione Granger: "research! the answer is research!"
