Western Civilisation - Tues 7th Period, Wed 5th Period: Class Information and Syllabus

Jan 09, 2006 10:34

Layout of South Humanities Wing, so you can find your classes and Dr. Pierson's office

OOC Character Information:

I've striven to make the syllabus look as authentic as possible, which may result in my faux prospective students going, "Oh, no, too much work for a fake class!"

Please do not worry. The most that I will require of my students is that they post "Here" in the attendance threads, post "*Character Name* said something insightful/silly/making it obvious he/she/it hadn't done the reading" in the discussion section, and "He/She/It turned in homework" in the homework threads.

Now, I would be absolutely delighted if you all did the homework every week, and in the discussion sections, if your character shows up and does not talk, they'll be marked down for lack of participation. Classes are a heck of a lot more fun if you roleplay your character participating, IMHO. However real life wins always, so do what you need to do.

Also, I will work with you all on what your characters should be getting as grades. While you might have been (or are) a scholastic overachiever, your character may be a slacker, or irresistibly distracted by sex/angst/gremlin bites during the semester, and their grade should reflect that.

IC Character Information:

Listen up, students. Your grade depends on the following breakdown:

Test 1 -- 15%
Test 2 -- 15%
Final -- 20%
Term Paper -- 20%
Homework -- 15%
Participation -- 15%

The list of Lecture and Discussion topics is as follows. Generally, the Tuesday classes are the Lectures, and will be held in the lecture hall. The Wednesday classes are the discussion classes, and will be held in Humanities Classroom #2 with the Emo Closet.

Discussion, by the way, means DISCUSSION. You will be expected to remember what was said in the lecture less than 24 hours before and discuss it.

If you miss two classes? Detention. Extraordinary excuses may be presented to the professor at his office hours.
If you miss handing in two homework assignments? Detention.

Any questions? My office hours are all day Friday, two doors down from Humanities Classroom #2. If you don't show up there, I'll assume everything is peachy and will happily flunk you if you don't fulfill requirements. Got it? Good.

Oh, and my TA for Western Civ is janet_fraiser. She's meaner than me.
