Stop the Traffik update

Jul 31, 2008 08:44

Perhaps some of you remember at the start of july I posted something from www.stopthetraffik.org about chocolate and child slavery.

(It's here: http://prof-irina.livejournal.com/80438.html in case anyone missed it)

Well, here's an update.

20% increase in traffik-free chocolate )

Silly question, but is child slavery used for other chocolate products such as ice cream and hot chocolate, and is there a way to ensure buying slavery-free products of those types too?

Not a silly question, and I need to know too!!!!

Seriously M, I have tried to navigate this stuff, and can't really figure out what companies in the states use the wrong stuff. (of course being a bit simple minded I need a list like: Hershey's yes; Nestles no; etc)

Well Nestles is suppose to be boycotted for a number of human rights violations last I heard. Sucks, cause I love cabury cream eggs and nestle owns that company. :( Dunno about hershey, maybe Irina knows.

Nestle is doing virtually nothing to stop using child slaves.
It looks like the only ones that are fair trade are: Green&Blacks Maya gold chocolate; Divine; Traders joe's; Equal Exchange.
Sorry, Hersheys looks like it has been making steps in the right direction but hasn't got there yet.

Basically, if the chocolate you buy doesn't have an actual "fair trade" mark on it, it's not.

I'll do another post about icecream. :-)

What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” Rom 7:7

You know, I was going on just fine until you guys started talking about chocolate, and now ALL THE SUDDEN since I'm not not supposed to eat it, I can't keep clear of the M&M's box in my office.

Grrrrr!
