There was another crack of thunder and a sharp, terrified cry came immediately after it. Laura covered her eyes with her small hands and brought her knees up to her chin. By the time James came into her room, Laura was already crying and rocking herself. “Laura… Laura, baby,” James was quickly at her side, already on the bed with her with his arms around her shaking frame. “Shhh, shhh. Calm down, love, calm down. I’m here.”

“Daddy,” Laura pressed her hands against her father’s chest and gripped the fabric of his shirt in her fists. She tilted her head back and stared up at him, her eyes still wide with terror. The tears had magically stopped, though. “Daddy, I-I’m scared…!”

“I know, baby, I know,” James placed a large hand on Laura’s head, then took it away and replaced it with his chin. He continued rocking her until she eventually eased her body. The lightning and rain was still strong outside, but maybe she’d forget about it if he stayed with her. James patted Laura’s hair down and pressed a kiss to her wet cheek. “It’s okay, Laura. It’s okay… don’t be scared, it can’t hurt you.”

They were both silent for a moment, then - “Daddy, I-I want to sleep with you tonight.”

James hesitated, then nodded and adjusted Laura so that she was laying bridal style in his arms. He stepped over the toys on her bedroom floor and nudged her schoolbooks out of the way with his foot and eventually got into the hallway. James kissed her forehead and carried her into his bedroom. He tucked his daughter into Mary’s side of the bed and slipped into his side. “It won’t hurt you,” he whispered, taking his daughter into his arms yet again. “You’re safe with me.”
