Going home with Rebekah was never part of the plan. Actually, seeing Rebekah a second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and so on times had never been part of the plan, either. One night to mourn all they'd lost and then go their own ways in a truce of silence that sliced anyway. But then he'd taken her home and, for some reason, asked her to stay. So, she'd stayed, and in the morning there hadn't been quite as much self-loathing as there'd been the night before.
That made no sense, of course, and after she left he'd gone back to hating himself (she'd killed Elena, and Ric, for fuck's sake. Maybe he could understand why enough to let her live, but that didn't mean he had to keep getting naked with her). But when he'd run into her a third time, they wound up back in his bed, and, after that, they'd given up the pretense of conveniently running into each other and actually made plans.
Casual plans, mind you. This was grief therapy, not love, not even like. Really. They got each other, that was all. No strings, not a big deal--they both said it, but when he fell asleep holding her, she was still in his arms in the morning.
Maybe they were just both that lonely.
He didn't ask about Elijah or Kol. She didn't ask about Elena or Stefan. It was shocking how much they managed to not talk about while whispering in the aftermath of passion, laying tangled in each other.
When she asked him over to the house on the Upper West Side that she lived in with Elijah, he'd been a little stunned (understandably, he figured). She'd shrugged, said something about wanting more space than Damon's flat in the Village and he'd asked her for what and that had led to him initiating her into the joys of phone sex before finally agreeing to come over.
Now, he was wandering around the den (it somehow felt more...something than a living room, but not quite a study, either, so he didn't know what else to call it) looking at items collected through the centuries. There was apparently a game room downstairs, and he was tempted to ask to see it (because somehow he could not actually picture Elijah with video game consoles minus Kol's presence, let alone the pool table she said was down there) (of course, he supposed Elijah could have tricked it out while he was up here after throwing Elena in the cave and set it up for his siblings to lure them away from Mystic Falls) (it didn't matter, he wasn't going to ask about the when), but, for now, he was comfortable with his bourbon and trying really hard not to think about other bourbons, and looking at a shapely bronze statue in the corner with a tilt of his head.
"Shouldn't this be in a gallery somewhere?"
