Good Nights and Weird Dreams

Last night was the last time Fergal and I would overlap in Austin with a free evening. He's off to Greece-by-way-of-Ireland today, and won't be flying back until the 4th of July. Since he's entering the country on the 4th, as a foriegn national, we're expecting that his 6:00 pm arrival time will be more like midnight. The boy has a PHD in astronomy, but he's still a young male with dark hair and the way american bureaucracy has been lately... yeah.
So since I'm leaving on internship on the 7th, that leaves us a very brief window of overlap later in the summer, of which at least one day will be spent at some sort of barbecue. So we went out for a drink last night.

I thought we were going to go down town, chill for a bit, and head back, but apparently that's no way to celebrate this sort of thing. So I was introduced to my first Austin pub-crawl. We hit up three places which were "famous" for various drinks: Ginger Man's for the newest thing on tap, Fado's for Guinness, and The Iron Cactus for Margaritas. The first two were great, but the margarita was waaaaaaaaaaaaay too sweet. While at Fado's, we were talked into a corner by a very energetic couple from Alabama. It was kind of funny, particularly when the guy bought shots of Jamison for Fergal, his wife and himself, but not me. Fergal can't drink whiskey. I had to help him finish the shot.

Fergal had to drop by his department on the way home (around 2:30-3:00 in the morning) to reboot a computer. He'd apparently gotten the call earlier in the night and was just putting it off. So we went up to the 17th story of the RLM building, pushed a button, and then went out on the roof to check out the view of greater Austin. It was quite spectacular; there was a storm coming in, and downtown was a sea of colored lights.

So all in all it was a fantastic evening, although I didn't get to bed until maybe 4:00 am.

I woke up a couple of times this morning, at least once from a truly bizarre dream. My mom, much younger than she is now, was giving birth. At least, I guess it was my mom, because I kept thinking of the babies as siblings, but we'll just say that my mind was not about to resolve the image of my own mother giving birth. Anyways, first baby comes great, beautiful little girl. The second baby (and it seemed like a surprise that there was a second one, was much more difficult because it was a much larger boy. He ended up coming out with a funny shaped head. They handed the first baby to me when she came out, and I held her, and put her to bed, everything was great. They handed the boy to me, and I was holding him upright against me, with his head against my right shoulder. At which point he bit me. I guess my shoulder must have spasmed or something in my sleep, because I pulled the baby away in my dream and he had a head of teeth a seven year old would have been proud of. There might have been double rows of them.
And then I woke up, and was pretty glad to have done so.

So I slept most of the morning. I mean to be in lab working. I'll make up for it tomorrow, but it was worth it for last night.
