McGee's transition from recurring to regular
Having recently been sucked into NCIS fandom, I've got a nagging question. I've tried to hunt down the answer with no success, so forgive me if this is common knowledge to everyone but me.
McGee wasn't assigned to Gibbs' team from the very beginning, but was brought on later as a series regular. Was he always meant to be a part of the team, and TPTB just took a while to introduce him, or were they trying out a succession of characters/actors to see who worked well with the established team?
Or, since Sean Murray is Bellisario's step-son, did Sean have to go through hoops to prove himself?
I hope that someone out there knows - my Google-fu is seriously failing me!
