I've now upgraded both my laptops to the Ubuntu Natty Narwhal beta. The Unity environment is the Big Controversial Thing in this release - they've scrapped the traditional Gnome panel menus for a MacOS-style dock. Unity is getting a lot of hate, especially after the news that the traditional Gnome menus won't be available in the October release. I'm undecided so far. It's a huge departure from the previous desktop environment, but I'm not sure whether or not it's actually bad. I can still get to all the information that used to be in the Gnome panel; it's just accessed differently. I very much appreciate the more efficient use of menu/panel space though - now application menus appear in the freed-up Gnome panel space at the top of the screen. Also Firefox 4 is a major win, although that doesn't have anything to do with the desktop environment of course. I'll be upgrading my desktops to Natty as soon as I'm sure it won't break Jungledisk.
