Sherlock Holmes Box!!

As if my obsession wasn't already glaringly obvious.  Nevertheless, i decided to make it just a little more pronounced and spent my Saturday artsing.  This is a basic decoupage technique, but instead of using tissue paper or wrapping paper like they teach in normal craft class, i print out my own pics and arrange them onto box forms (this one ( Read more... )

1) Smearing: Always a danger (though it hasn't been too noticeable for me unless you look really closely). It probably depends on how good your printer is or the quality of the ink.
What smears the most is actually the puzzle saver glue which gives it that glossy finish. All you gotta do to prevent that is to keep getting fresh glue (you'll see the glue start to change turn more blue or red when it starts picking up color from the ink). Also, keep your brushstrokes shorter. Be patient and don't just go over the entire surface like when painting a fence. Put gloss over individual pictures and then add a second coat. (i don't do this because i don't care enough, but there you are)
To reduce the chance of smearing is also to use a regular glue stick to place/stick the pictures, instead of the decoupage glue. The decoupage glue is meant to soften the paper so it can adhere better to uneven surfaces. The glue stick will keep it from smearing, but your pics won't stick as tightly and may leave wrinkles if you aren't careful when pressing them.
Oddly, the danger is mainly with white-ish pics. Dark pics may discolour slight, but usually they turn out totally fine, if not better because the colours become heightened.

2) Edges and Corners: Like i said above, real decoupage glue will soften the paper (and make it curl, so be careful). But the decoupage glue will make the pics more malleable so you can force the paper around curves, corners, and edges more easily.

2b) Decorating Edges: Anything you cut off of the main pics, save, so you can use them later to cover up any leftover cardboard peeking through.

Yup, decoupage. Good stuff. (even if the original "decoupage" i learned was less interesting. it had to do with flower wrapping paper as i recall)
