1667 words for yesterday....

I did actually accomplish my word goal the other day. I found that much of it was information I chose not to make public. Instead, I have selected some text from my stream of concious writing that I felt comfortable sharing with the rest of the world:

Everyone around me has an I phone and Ibejealous. Dan, Phil & Lana all have one and it seems that anyone that owns one can’t help but demonstrate the coolness that is I phone. I admit it - I’m Jonesing. It must be pretty bad because I’m Jonesing more about the fact that L. has an I phone than that she’s on a cross country road trip.

My newest favorite drink is Captain Morgan’s Parrot Bay Coconut Rum. It goes great with anything it seems. I’ve mixed it with Fruit Punch, Orange Juice, Cranberry Juice, Orange and Cranberry Juice combined, and lately I have some every night in my herbal tea right before bedtime.

In OMG news of the day we received a hand-addressed package from George Hrab! Geo sent us three CD’s: Minutiae, Sic, and Coelacanth! Lee opened up the CD’s at lunch to look at the accompanying jacket material and found that Geo had hand-written a note to me!! “To: Valerie, the Hottest Topekan I know” OMG OMG OMG OMG! I’ve had a goofy shit-eating grin since then.

In upcoming news of greatness to come: We are going to DRAGON CON 2009! WOOOOOOO. Hopefully George will be there and we can meet up with him. We simply must at least buy him dinner in return for producing the fantastic private show he performed for the ACT.

Weekend news report: We had two ACT events this weekend. We all went to Paisano’s for dinner and were delighted to see six new faces! We had a total showing of 30! We had the most new attendees ever this weekend and that was fantastic! We’ve come a long way in one short year.

Most of the new faces also made it to O’Dooley’s Pub after. We had fun and stayed until midnight visiting with old and new members. On Sunday we had our once a month adopt-a-park cleanup. Dennis brought his kayak and cleaned up the pond from a better angle and the rest of us got ‘er done in about an hour or so this time. We had the biggest turn out I’ve seen at a cleanup. In seven more cleanups we’ll get our adopt a park sign with our organization name posted.

I’m so happy that Lee started this group. Since the Atheist Community of Topeka was founded a little more than one year ago we’ve met some fascinating people. Every meeting is exciting and brings us closer to our new friends. It feels like we are making a difference in people’s lives and that is a wonderful thing.

When Lee and I went to Austin last month Lee was able to meet Matt, Schilling, Russell and Jeff from The Non Prophets and Atheist Experience. They are members of the Atheist Community of Austin. They were the one group that influenced Lee the most about moving forward with his plans to start an Atheist Community Group in Topeka. The ACA has been around for 11 years now and I think they have somewhere around 400 members.

I am so proud of Lee because we attended two ACA events and I really wasn’t impressed with the turn out. They have over 400 members and about the same amount of members showed up to their events as do to ours and we have less than 50 members. Their group also seemed to mostly consist of white males where we are more balanced and have more female members and more of a diverse crowd in general.

I loved the city of Austin. The weather was great and we had fun walking on a trail that went along the river in the downtown area. It was very wooded and we were amazed at how busy the trail was. It seemed like there were so many people out jogging, riding a bike, or walking their dogs. The weather was perfect and we noticed we never saw any bugs - which Lee reminded me was probably because the bats eat them all.

Getting out of Topeka only reminded me how much I really hate living here. I want to live where it’s warmer. We will probably move to Ft. Worth when the kids leave the house to go to College. BNSF corporate headquarters are in Ft. Worth and Lee has advanced as far as he can at the offices in Topeka. Still looking at another four or five years here.
