Favorite character

Benjamin Linus:
First off, I must say that I’m a sucker for a good anti hero. I love the journey from darkness to redemption and no character better represents that then Benjamin Linus. When we first saw him he was the ultimate bad guy, the trickster out to foil our heroes, but then we learned more about his background. His illness, his abusive father and the death of his mother, and the darkness purge. Some people screamed evil, but I saw a sympathetic and very lost character. One who would do anything for the Island; a ends justify the means kind of guy. Then there is everything that happened with Alex. I truly believe that Ben mistrusted the rules of the Island. He thought Alex was safe just to lose her and that was a loss he could barely handle.

In the end, Ben is still haunted by the decision he made that lead to Alex’s death. And as with all Lost characters the show ends with him trying to deal and over come those mistakes he made. I loved seeing him struggle and conquer his demons, though as proper they were still with him when the show ended. He, after all, had a lot to face up to.

Character I Hated, but Now Love

Rodney Mckay:
I rarely go from hating a character to loving them. It just doesn’t happen, but when I saw Rodney on Stargate SG-1 I was horrified that he was going to be one of the leads of Stargate Atlantis. He was a complete asshole. He was sexist and arrogant. His crush on Sam was cringe worthy and just plain insulting.

It didn’t help that I naturally sided with Sam Carter in their fights. She was Sam and I knew and loved her already. So when she fought with Rodney it ended up with me being pissed at his nerve. How dare he talk to her like that? She is brilliant. Who the hell does he think he is?

But the moment SGA started all that melted away. Right off from the pilot Rodney was shown, yes to be arrogant, but also funny, lovable and socially awkward. He was also shown to be the second best. Sam was preferred to go, but she couldn’t so they sent him. That little detail adds so much to why I love Rodney. Amazing, brilliant and arrogant as he is there is this thing hovering over him that he isn’t enough. He isn’t the best and he is always trying to prove himself. With that detail I fell in love with the character.

Something Old

Doctor Who:
One thing I love about Doctor Who is it’s history It has 45 years of history and canon under it’s belt and while there are many bumps in his roads, including lost episodes and a cancellation, at the end of the day it adds to it’s appeal. It’s wonderful going back and exploring older episodes and Doctors and seeing how the characters and vision for the show changed. The special effects are dated, but so many of the stories hold up. They did the best with what they had and in a way they had to be more creative with the lack of budget and resources.

And I love seeing fans that have been into the show from the first ep. That is some loyally there and you can’t have that with most shows. Also seeing some fans go from fanboys to writers or actors for the show is amazing. There is a passion there that you don’t get in many other fandoms because of it.

Classic Who just makes New Who better. Without it I really think your missing a huge chunk of the picture.
