Sometimes you have to jump in the deep end I guess. Maybe you should hail a few more taxis and see what you can learn from the cab drivers!!!

I take taxis all the time, but until recently have resorted to just the name of the place I'm going and pointing at a map! No more of that for me if I can help it!
Maya's Korean classes have helped me in a roundabout way as I'm starting to be able to understand others sometimes (at least a word here or there) and that's giving me the confidence to start using them myself.

The language barrier must be one of the most daunting things about being over there. I couldn't imagine being completely immersed in a language/culture so different from my own. I think I could handle Spanish (in one of its forms or another) because it has permeated American culture so much already, but Korean?

Congratulations on your budding Korean language skills! I am so impressed! I remember going to a little mexican carry-out shortly after we moved to California. I was barely able to request "Rice and beans, please. 4 tortillas, please. Thank you." Hardly poetry, but I got what I requested - and they waited until I was gone to make fun of me - so I felt accomplished.
