Crazy Rahl Thoughts
I just had a crazy fic idea.
WHAT IF Renn is Darken Rahl and Cara's son?
No no no no, stay with me. Okay? SO. Rahls can totally have red hair, right. Cause. Jennsen. And he's around the right age. And Renn is halfway Darken paying homage to the sister he keeps an eye on cause Renn. Jenn. Yeah. And halfway naming him after a past Rahl (in the books, Warren Rahl is the son of Nathan Rahl.) So Renn's real full name is Warrenn.
And so. Darken is all worried about Renn having a fucked up childhood like his, and also assassins, and how do you babies anyway, srsly, and he sees how Jennsen has totally had an okay life so far with just him keeping an eye on her, so he figures, hey, that could totes work for Warrenn. So he has a wizard magic up some loyal D'Harans and changes their memories so they think Renn is really theirs, cause Darken isn't going to trust them to just not take advantage of raising a Rahl, and he sends them off to a D'Haran village where he thinks Renn will have a cool childhood until he's old enough to be told who he really is.
And then.
Renn turns out to be a Listener, and GODDAMIT RENN'S PRETEND PARENTS, YOU HAD ONE JOB. So Renn gets sold into slavery, and Darken is going nuts and he starts taking over kingdoms and shit because he's trying to figure out who has his son, and that is part of why the war has gotten so aggressive HE JUST WANTS HIS KID BACK OKAY. And so finally, finally, Darken finds Renn and buys him and sends his soldiers after him, but he's afraid of what they'll do if they know Renn is a Rahl, so they just think they're going after a valuable slave. Then the GODDAM SEEKER and his GODDAM CONFESSOR interfere, and Darken's son is lost to him again. And THIS, THIS is what prompts the berserker attack on the Confessors, because Darken doesn't know where Richard and Kahlan stashed Renn, but he bets the Confessors either have him, or they know.
And this is why Darken really betrays the Keeper, why he really wants to save the world of the living. He made his deal with the Keeper before Renn was born, and he's been trying to find a way out of it ever since. He has to save the world so that his son can grow up to be a better king, a better man than Darken ever was. And can you imagine a Listener King? Darken salivates at the thought of it. HIS SON SHALL BE THE GREATEST RAHL TO EVER RAHL.
And all of this, ALL OF THIS, is swirling around Darken's head when Renn and Darken finally meet, and when everyone asks Renn what's going on with Darken, Renn just says, "His mind is filled with confusing thoughts."
And he knows that he has just met his father.
And when it's time for him to go to Aydindril, to stay with Dennee, he asks for Cara to take him. He doesn't tell her she's his mother, not yet, but he wants to know her.
