Red doesn't quite know whether to punch him or love him. As his childhood friend, Green always had a special spot in Red's life. Things wouldn't be as exciting without his rival smoking the road up for him, whether Red liked it or not. It was Green's existence that molded who Red has become. He has grown tolerant and patient to others because of him.
In fact, it's turned into the point that Red actually appreciated them. His life wouldn't be complete without Green's ridiculous teasings or trollings. He felt that he matured because of Green. It was also Green's challenges that brought out certain potentials in Red. We can't forget who Red even followed in the first place regarding Pokemon Battling.
Just like how Green didn't want to lose to Red, Red also has that constant feeling that he didn't want to lose to Green. A part of him felt competitive about it, but another often feared that if he didn't keep up with the egoistic bastard, they wouldn't be friends anymore. But the events passed by so fast, that Red suddenly found himself as the new Champion of Kanto.
When Red looked back between them, he feared for the worst. If he surpassed Green, would it also create the same result as him not being able to keep up with his rival? The result was obvious when Red witnessed Green flee from Indigo Plateau and heard each word that Professor Oak that let out in front of the two of them. He knew that it hurt to hear such things from your own family member. He couldn't stand Green to be away from him. He wanted him to keep being his rival... his friend. That's why he dropped it all and ran.
Green is someone very important to Red. All though they have their differences, and mutual dislike as each other's rivals - deep down, Red truly cares for Green. He wouldn't trade their friendship for anything in the world.
