First Read-Through

Yay! The blog didn't collapse after one entry!

Today the cast assembled and read through the show.  Man, is it naughty.  There are only a few things that are a bit too extreme and may need to be changed, but hopefully they're worded such that they'll just go over the audience's head.  There's some character development happening already.  This show needs it.  I noticed myself either slipping into Muriel or Kanga or even Ismene as I read- I gotta find a distinct personality and voice for this lady.  The script's difficult to gather clues from.  I guess that means that the choices I make can't be wrong.  In one way, I picture Raymonde as Anne Egerman, but she's also a lot like Charlotte Malcom.  (Okay, I guess I'm just wishing this were A Little Night Music....) So, she's kinda vulnerable but not young, and kinda bitchy but that's not her main character trait....I'd list other things I see, but then I feel like they would put her in a box. Too early.  I'll keep reading, see what everyone else does with their roles and find a good place for Raymonde.  I picture this woman- but I can't put a finger on where I've seen a character like her before- I'm actually thinking of the adult women from Spring Awakening....I dunno.  I should be wary of over-thinking it. It's farce. It's light. People are irrational.  In Feydeau, the point is that they're.  I don't need to dig into Raymonde's desire to find out her husband due to the social repression of women at the time or deeply psychological fears of betrayal.  There's no reform message or philosophical statement to be made- Feydeau wrote this play to make people laugh.  I  was reading an article today in Dramatics (which I still haven't recieved as part of my thespian membership...grr) about getting into character. I didn't get to finish it, but it seemed like it said that characters on stage are basically irrational, because anything that we wouldn't do personally seems irrational to us.  I want to finish that article.  Man,  we're gonna be pressed. For. Time. The show's in like, five weeks. Act I is due next week. We're supposed to block the entire thing this week. Let's hope it gets done, because everyone needs to be so solid.  And begin memorizing....now!
