AT LEAST once a week, I place a hand on my Honda Element, and proclaim my love for the vehicle. It is a master of utility, an unassuming yet elegantly-efficient beast of burden. Trouble free in every respect.

The Element was always based on Honda's (much) more expensive CR-V, but to me the two look as different as night and day.

Your post made me flirt--unemployed, without any revenue source--of hurrying up and buying a new Element to replace my 2004. I cannot do it, and not just because I don't have the cash, or job. That car has held my parents, one now deceased, as we journeyed through American deserts and mountain chains. It has piloted me safely through other countries. It has sat perfectly still in traffic jams for hours at a time, and spirited me and coworkers at speeds well in excess of 100 mph. In the very best sense possible, it has been a companion machine. I will use it and cherish it until nothing practicable of it remains.

And then I will feel bad and seek out something to replace it. If I ever find something with half the utility, elegantly straightforward design, and ease of operation--then I shall consider myself lucky.

I feel the same and will keep mine as long as I can regardless what I choose when I replace my sedans.

I halfheartedly looked at the new Elements but was disappointed to see they no longer offer manual transmissions with AWD.
