Petition against incident of discrimination of Asians

An area radio DJ harassed local Asian restaurant workers by calling them and making fun of their manner of speech. Though this incident may seem trivial to some, please imagine the same situation happening to another sub-culture or race. For instance, if this attack had been focused on African-American owned establishments, I believe the public wouldn't be so accepting of it. Why is it considered okay to make fun of and harass Asians for their accents? Is it because we're deemed to polite and submissive to fight back?
The petition was made by Asian Communities United, a student group (of which I am secretary) at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. If you would like more information, please feel free to ask. ^_^
