9/11 and other thoughts

Today is 9/11. Memorials will happen across the country, including one at ground zero. 9/11 remains a tragedy, but I can't help but contrast our one terrorist attack to the near daily ones that happen in certain countries of the Middle East. We have had one foreign terrorist attack in recent history and average a domestic terrorist attack every ( Read more... )

I agree with the 9/11 thing. It was horrible, but I do think we should be turning at least some of our attention to people dying in horrible attacks elsewhere :(

and HAHA for Sen. Craig. "*GASP* A bathroom toe-tapper?! In our party?!" ^^ Simply hilarious. Whats so bad too is that he was SO adamant about fighting against gay rights issues.. what a twist!

Having a measure of pride in one's country/origins and remembering past tragedies can be important, but allowing our ethnocentric gaze to overlook the tragedies of the rest of the world is indeed sad.

In an interview, William Gibson responds to the question concerning a multiracial character:

The character Tito is Cuban-Chinese, which seems to sort of speak to the idea that borders are dissolving. Do you think that's the way the world is moving, to the dissolution of regional distinctions?

WG: Well, I've always been interested in people who aren't from anywhere in particular. I think it's all melting. This has been true for as long as I can remember in my adult life. If I meet someone and discover that they're an absolute, very earnest nationalist, it's unlikely that I'm going to get much closer to them. I don't understand them. It doesn't matter where they're from, I just don't get it. I'm a multi-national kind of guy, I think.

Too many people - outside of the U.S. included - I feel are stuck in their own national comfort zone.

I think things are all melting- but it's not doing it as fast as it could be due to many people being nationalist and not willing to see past that in a way.
No willing to traverse the world and be APART of the world and not just apart of a nation in it.

I agree and would follow William Gibson more because I'm sorta the same way (multi-national kind of person).

On the completely non-political side (because all I ever do when I make political comments is cause drama, which I try to avoid)...happy birthweek, my former Captain. May it be even more tingly than your last yoga encounter.
